Nitty Gritty consist of four members Gary “Shad Diesel†Titington, Michael “Smurf Lee†Smith, Kevin “Sunny Red†Williams and Octavious “B-Will†Williams. While finishing up the Misellanyous album in 2004 B-Will and Smurf Lee met Diesel at the studio and the three of them decided to collaborate on a few tracks. At the time they had no idea of what was to become of the trio until B-Will’s brother Sunny Red would be added to the mix. In 2005 was the birth of Nitty Gritty. Their first single “Nitty†would prove to be a positive start for the group once they preformed it live at The Rivers Edge, a hotel in Clarksville TN. The motivation from the show lit a flame for the group as they worked on their demo. They hit the studio hard recording three more tracks entitled “Buddy Setâ€, “Damnâ€, and the ever so controversial “One Shot One Killâ€. As the group hit the streets running full speed they took a road trip to Huntsville Alabama to perform in the Annual Black Art Festival in the summer of 04’, Which parts of the performance was aired on BET. Soon after, they performed once again in the Clarksville Riverfest as an headliner for the unsigned artist mix. Only to head line the newspaper the next day.
The Following months would prove rough; with funds running low the morale of the group started to slowly decrease. Even though they couldn’t afford to get in the studio, they still continued to brainstorm new ideas for the album to come. Being in the financial position at hand, the group decided to call the album “Goin 4 Brokeâ€. The Album would be 100% music from the beginning to the end. With Greedy and Traz producing the album was sure to be a success. “Goin 4 Broke†the single would feature one Clarksville best R&B artist Tommy Johnson a.k.a Jo Jizzle. With an hour here and there Nitty finished the album despite the obstacles they faced along the way.
Nitty Gritty is more then just some rap group trying to make it into the industry. They are family, which through thick and thin have stuck together. Myspace has given them an opportunity to expose themselves, and the group has received an abundance of positive feedback internationally. Nitty Gritty plans to over the next year complete another album, a mix tape, and a new Misellanyous project . They are also working to schedule a Nitty road tour, with performances over seas.
With the support of the fans, their families, and friends Nitty has come a long way. Since each member of the group is from different parts of the country they plan to take the world by storm with a collaboration of west coast , mid west, and the dirty south all rolled into one arsenal of flame spitting, money making, go get’n entrepreneurs. Nitty Gritty lives by one motto “Loyalty first, you get back what you put inâ€.
