About Tom Burdine -- Tom Burdine creates music across all boundaries for any and all reasons and purposes - - A LITTLE ABOUT TOM NOW- - - - Tom is by day a computer technician with SunGard and by night a musician, composer and recordist.Tom opened his "BigRicky Recording Studio" complex in 2002 in beautiful downtown Sugar Hill, Georgia. The MoJo Sisters and Brian Shaw are his biggest name clients recently, selling well below a million copies of their latest CDs created at BigRicky.Big Steve "RudeKnockee" Erickson and Tony Gallucci also have done major sessions recently at the RickyComplex. - - - A LITTLE ABOUT TOM THEN - -- Tom, born at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, in 1950, started taking piano lessons in the late 50s because his sister did, and "dropped out" of formal musical training after his 3rd recital at Mrs. Webster's house on Amsterdam Ave., in the Virginia Highland area of Atlanta. Tom, and his sister Patrice, also had a Spanish teacher named Mrs. Webster; that's another story.Tom is related to the founder of the Burdines stores started in Miami, Florida, in 1898. Now part of Macy's, the chain was founded by William, Tom's great Grandfather Thomas' half brother.Tom and sister Patrice vacationed in the 50s at their Aunt Helen & Uncle Charlie's home in SW Virginia, on US23, near Clinchport, in Scott County, on the Clinch River, a short distance from the Carter Family home. Their mother Shirley lived in the area from 1930 until 1942, while the Carter Family was recording their seminal music. Shirley attended school in Rye Cove, immortalized by the Carters in song. When US23 was widened in the 60s, Helen & Charlie's place was in the way of construction and they moved to Hiltons, down the road from the Carter Fold. Fond memories exist of summers spent at Helen & Charlie's little spread in the holler with the branch running lazily through it.Tom & Patrice also used to summer in Lawrenceburg, TN, home of their father, Thomas, whose Aunt Gladys gave Tom and Patrice pointers on playing the piano. Gladys was an accomplished organist & pianist and previously had played at the local theater for the silent movies. Also living in Lawrenceburg, Tom & Patrice's Grandfather and Great Uncle Tom had played in local bands; Russell, the Grandfather, played clarinet, guitar, bones and spoons, and all his daughters, as well as his wife Lucille, played piano and ukulele. Everyone loved to gather 'round and sing. A very musical family. Lawrenceburg is south of Nashville, is known for Southern Gospel Music and was the home of Davy Crockett once; his statue graces the town square. In High School, starting around 1965, Tom played Farfisa Organ and sang in garage bands, then graduated to Hammond Organ and sock hops in the gym, playing with "The Good Omens" & "The Fourmore." Two Fourmore alumni, Stan Ruffin and Randy Bugg, were members of "Smoke Rise," which did a 1971 Paramount album "The Survival of St. Joan: A Rock Opera" - it included strong, melodic songs by the Ruffin Brothers and James Lineberger, award-winning cover art, and was tied in with the Broadway play of the same name.Tom gigged professionally from 1968 until the mid-80s, in a plethora of Jam, Basement, Garage, Pop, Hippie, Stoned, Jazz, Rock, Living Room, Soul, Urban Cowboy, Swamp, Frat Party, Prom, Lounge-Lizard, Top40 and studio scenarios. Tom's closest brushes with fame were gigging with Butch, an ex-bassist of Jerry Lee Lewis (aka "The Killer,") who shot Butch once, also, eating dinner one night at the Monroe/85 Holiday Inn, where he was gigging, with Atlanta-based Paul Davis, who had some big hits (like "I Go Crazy"), auditioning to play bass once with Atlanta's own Glenn Phillips (and meeting his goat) and playing keyboards in a couple of bands, "The All-American Smooth Boys Band" and "Reel People", with Bill Turpin, the father of Will Turpin, who went on to become the bassist with "Collective Soul". Will used to hang around and listen to the Smooth Boys practice at Bill's house and studio. And, there was the hot pepper eating contest at Will Boyd's girlfriend's pool party, but that's another story. Another close brush with fame - Tom's cousin Jennifer is married to Larry Hart, whose great uncle Lorenz was the Hart of Rodgers and Hart. Tom "went back to school" in the mid-80s, got a degree in computer technology, and just recently, in 2002, "got back into" music.
