Music:
I grew up in the '80s, so unfortunately I enjoy a lot of that music. My theory is that I've imprinted upon it like a duckling to its mother. I have no conscious control over it.
That aside, I like a lot of different stuff. I tend not to single out genres or even artists. I pick out songs here and there that appeal to me. How I come across them is anyone's guess.
I like MC Frontalot , mc chris , MC Hawking , and Kompressor . My buddy Mark Plaid introduced me to ska, for which I am grateful. I'm also generally pleased with Emily's ToyBox . More recently, I've realized that I kind of enjoy hip hop.
When I'm at my computer, I prefer listening to instrumentals, because lyrics tend to distract me while I'm trying to read whatever's on the screen. An unexpected source of good instrumental music I've discovered is video game soundtracks. The soundtracks for Dungeon Keeper , Interstate '76 , Interstate '82 , and Homeworld are rather enjoyable, I think.
Movies:
I have a hard time picking movies that I like; I only own a dozen or so on DVD (they keep getting stolen). They don't fall into a neat category, and many is the time I worry that the films I like are "dumb."
A few of the films I've enjoyed include: Memento , Series 7: The Contenders , Fight Club , Sin City , Top Secret! , Idiocracy , and Repo Man , among others.
Television:
I turned off my television in February of 2003. Since then, I've used it for video games and DVDs, but not to watch anything televised, with the lone exception of watching a press conference about the Columbia disaster .
I don't hate television. I don't think anyone should "kill" their television. I simply have no time for it. Of all the things which burned up my personal time, television was the largest offender and most easily discarded. I still watch a lot of television when I'm visiting friends.
I rely on my friends to recommend television shows to me, and I only ever see them once they arrive on DVD. I actually spend more collecting TV shows on DVD than movies, which is, unfortunately, causing television to consume more of my time again.
I generally prefer comedies, and have an especial enthusiam for Family Guy .
Books:
I've been sucked into the Harry Potter series; I cannot explain its allure. My buddy Fred has found an interesting series of books involving a wizard who works as a private detective in modern-day Chicago.
I also like Max Barry's writing. He has three novels now: Jennifer Government , Syrup , and Company .
Heroes:
I once read that if you think of someone as a hero, it means you aren't looking close enough at them. I guess it was meant to emphasize the fallibility of us all.
That said, Dr. Norman Borlaug seems pretty impressive to me.
