About Me

Music I like to listen to while writing. Enjoy.
I write books. I love art. Plus, I truly enjoy curling up with some good reading material and a warm cup of whatever on a cool night. Cool nights don't happen often here in Florida, so I enjoy them whenever I can.
I like people who aren't afraid to express what they think. I do it through my realistic horror/thriller novel, my "futuristic history" novels (aka: sci-fi), my blogs, my ramblings, yada, yada, yada. It doesn't matter...just join in and say what you think. To me, that's what makes the world go round. (the line from a song: you make me go rights round, baby, rights round, like a record, baby, rights round, round, round...starts repeating in my brain)
I enjoy talking with people, but, every so often I have to have some quiet time. Either that, or I'm deep into the process of creating a book, or designing a cover, or editing, or promoting, or...stuff. I do pop in and out of here a lot. Hey, I need breaks from all that work. (grin) It might be for a moment, or a few hours. Depends. Feel free to chat if you see me on.

After is a science fiction novel depicting what the world could be like if we're not careful.
A virus created by the government for germ warfare escapes and runs rampid, wiping out a large percentage of the Earth's population. Out of the billions of inhabitants, only a few hundred thousand remain when the killing spree ends.
Drayco and Shyanne are twins who made it through all the chaos, only to watch all technological advances disappear with the virus. The sword rules now, and transportation is by horseback.
Unfortunately, the virus alters the pair in inconceivable ways. For one, it is manageable. For the other, it is a living nightmare. To survive, they are forced to separate.
In the year 2215, the longing to be with family fills them. They begin looking for each other. Upon finding one another, they learn that someone else is looking for them, as well.
The Boss wants Shyanne badly, and they have no idea why. With their animal companion, a genetically altered mountain lion named Drizzle, the twins embark on a cross-country journey to find out.
Many obstacles are encountered along the way. The worst is a mercenary named Ruben. He will stop at nothing to accomplish what he is paid to do, even if it involves killing his own men.
Through some unfortunate turn of events, the mercenary succeeds in capturing Shyanne. Now Drayco must survive his biggest challenge, a challenge filled with pain and suffering, if he is to help his sister survive the Boss.
Key note: $2 from the sale of each book in the Journey of Twins Series will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
Reviews for "After":
I give Janet props for writing a book with such a theme behind it. Most post apocalyptic world stories sometimes aren't as good as you'd expect them to be. Maybe it's because of the way that the world as we know it came to an end, or not. I loved the virus that she created, and the way it affected those who managed to survive through it. The characters she created were wonderful, and I felt connected to them. I felt their pain, their fear, and their suffering. It was wonderfully written, and I can't wait for a sequel to come out, because she left it open for one.
–Mousey "Mouse"
As an avid reader, I enjoy watching a story play in my minds eye while I read. While reading After, I not only felt the emotions of the characters come through in a truly palpable sense, I also felt my emotions mingling with them, making the story a more personal experience. At the end of After, I not only felt satisfied but I also wanted more so I could continue my relationship with the characters. I look forward to seeing where Janet will take me next.

This was actually a very cool read!!!

Five years have passed since the defeat of the Boss. For Shyanne and Joseph, it meant settling down and raising a family. For Drayco, it meant searching for the one who escaped during their last encounter...the mercenary named Ruben.
For the first time since the virus, peace fills Shyanne's life. Now that peace is shattered. Ruben has returned and he has taken the one thing dearest to her heart--her son.
Once again, Joseph, Drizzle, and the twins embark on a mission filled with battles and hardships. Only this time the stakes are far greater. This time they hope to find Joey before his young life is ended forever.

Nature Kranderson, a reclusive psychic, stumbles upon the work of a serial killer when she tries to locate a missing teen for her family. For some reason, the killers face remains shrouded. That has never happened before. She has always been able to ID them. It frustrates her, and makes her a little nervous. Unfortunately, she can see everything he does to the girls--every perverted detail--including a wire whisk used on one girl and a riding crop on another. He gets off keeping them naked and using them as often as possible before he becomes disenchanted. When that happens, death follows.
Nature joins forces with Sheriff Web Westerly and begins a cross-country journey that takes them to Florida. Another teenage girl is missing from the Brevard County area, and the police have asked for her help. They want to find the girl before anything happens to her. After they arrive, Nature discovers her disappearance has nothing to do with the 'Man', as she's dubbed the killer.
While in Florida, the police approach her about another missing girl. She was taken from a park near the beach and they suspect it may be the serial killer who has her. Nature confirms their suspicions. Afterwards, thinking her work is done, she gets ready to go home, back to Montana. Before that happens, she is called upon for another case in Daytona. The Man has struck again.
The news people catch wind of the missing girls. They learn of Nature's involvement and track her down, seeking an exclusive interview, flashing her face across the television screen once they locate her. Unfortunately, someone else is watching that day. A serial killer is looking for his next target, and he thinks he may have found her on the news.

Reviews for "Innocence Taken":
Just wanted to let you know that the dust bunnies, laundry, and the kids' dinner will just have to wait...and it's all your fault. Innocence Taken is just too gripping to put down!!! Bravo!
–Diane, author of "His Black Dahlia", featured in Horrotica, Issue 2
Innocence Taken is one of the most compelling books I have ever read. This book grabbed me from the first page to the last; I couldn't put it down. An exciting, thrilling and at the same time horrifying ride through the mind of a clairvoyant and the madman that she is connecting to.
–Sharon
Innocence Taken is very graphic and detailed, and so might not be suitable for every reader. It is a fascinating suspenseful novel though, and the characterization of Nature, the psychic protagonist, is well done and intriguing. The secondary characters are delineated well also. Many readers will be drawn to this story, despite the detailed violence of the murders. Janet Durbin will be an author to watch.
–Frost, reviewer from TwoLipsReviews.com
If you want a terrifying ride into the mind and acts of a psychotic and the person that has to track him through a physicconnection, this is the book. A frighting, engrossing page turner.
–Gordon
First, Readers should be forewarned that this book contains a considerable amount of graphic sexual violence. Innocence Taken is a seriously chilling tale following the chase for a sadistic killer that involves a lot of emotions, a great deal of suspense, and a heavy dose of horror. Ms. Durbin has created two compelling leading characters. Nature's ability to deal with so much overwhelming emotional bombardment, and her continued dedication to helping others despite the tax her "gift" takes on her, proves her to be a remarkably strong and courageous heroine. In addition, Web's gruff demeanor and protectiveness toward Nature easily endear him as a hero. In fact, Nature and Web make for an appealing couple and their budding romance acts as a shining light in this often dark thriller.

My Interests

Special Notice

I have helped the local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) organization for the past 10 years. It's been mostly through my work and as a community member. Now, I feel it's time to help as an author.

With the sale of each book in the Journey of Twins Series -After, Stolen (coming August 2007), and any other book in this particular series, I will donate $2 to JDRF. The sales can come from any place where my book is sold. Due to the explicit material it contains, the Nature Kranderson books are not a part of the fundraising efforts.

With your help, we can make the end of Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes a reality instead of a dream.

Thanks,

Janet Durbin

About JDRF:

JDRF was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes - a disease that strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $1 billion to diabetes research worldwide. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and education about research. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. For more information, visit the JDRF web site at http://www.jdrf.org .

Now, on to other things that are interesting. Like:

Reading, writing, stuff. I was raised on Star Trek, the older show with Captain Kirk, Mr Spock, Dr McCoy, Scotty, and all the rest, not the newer one. To me, the Starship Enterprise was the best thing on or off the planet. When they blew it up, I cried. Even though they made a new one, it wasn't the same.

Andre Norton intoduced me to different planets and beings. Her imagination was far-reaching, her stories short but enough. Her books didn't have to be 600 pages long for you to enjoy what she had to show. I will miss her, and wish I could have met her before she left us forever.

Anne McCaffrey, with her Dragonrider series, made me want a fire lizard so very badly! Now, her son, Todd, makes me want one even more. Way to go, Todd, keep the books coming.

Welp, that's enough for now. Have to go cause some more mayhem in my books. Wish I could ride a dragon or soar in a spaceship instead. Read anything you want and let you imagination fly to different places and worlds.

A Pern Quiz: What Color Dragon Would You Ride?
Brownrider! Like F'nor and L'tol, you would ride a brown dragon. You are dependable and trustworthy, and would probably be chosen as a wingsecond. Of all the dragonriders, you are the most friendly and understanding, but still know how to fight hard and win.

I'd like to meet:

Man...who I'd like to meet: anyone who enjoys reading the emerging newcomers to the writing world. New stuff is what helps a stagnant world stay fresh.

People who are interesting. People who are open-minded. People who enjoy life. People who understand that no matter what, you're allowed to be human. Basically...people.

Plus the Crazy Frog creator. He's a genius! Some may find the catchy tune annoying...but I find it hilarious. (I'm known to have a warped sense of humor.) GO CRAZY FROG!!

Music:

Nightwish, Kamelot, Sonata Artica, Apocalyptica, Break of Reality, Korn, Linkin Park, Straylight Run, Within Temptation, old stuff, new stuff, whatever I feel like listening to.

Movies:

Action ones mostly, like Independence Day, Twister, Speed, Pitch Black, The Chronicals of Riddick, Die Hard, The Relic, Phantasm, Volcano, Dante's Peak, Star Wars, Star Trek, and many other. But also funny ones, like Groundhog Day, Mystery Men, Short Circuit, etc, etc, etc. Nothing too sappy or sad. That way I don't mess up my makeup in public. (Private viewings are okay, I can be a real blubber baby then.)

Television:

Don't watch it as much as I used to. When I do, I like American Idol and Ghost Hunters. Go TAPS!! Now...if anyone reading this is from the Sci-Fi Channel...bring back my Ghost Hunters! It used to be on Wednesdays. Some stupid B-rated movies have replaced it. (sigh)At least I have DVD's now. Yeah!!

Books:

Anne McCaffrey, Todd McCaffrey-Dragonrider series, J. A. Jance-Sheriff Brady books, Terry Brooks-Shannara series, Stephen Woodworth-his Violet books, Andre Norton-all of them, Dean Koontz-all of them, and many, many others. And, of course, my own. :)

Check out http://www.janetdurbin.com for more information.

Heroes:

Anyone who has the courage to admit when they did something wrong, instead of saying: "It's not my fault." or "I didn't do it." Anyone who still uses manners, respect, kindness, and all those other things that used to exist. Anyone who believes that all the problems in the world are NOT solved by taking a pill.

And I love it when people encourage others to get out and enjoy life. Watch the video to see what I mean.
