I'd like to meet:
100 Young Americans
This is directed at anyone who finds my profile through the "100 Young Americans" book. Let me first of all say that I was honored, humbled, and surprised that I had been chosen for this book. However I'd like to give some clarifications to the misconstrued quotes and material within my page. It seems as though I was chosen for the book to fill a stereotype, and they weren't necessarily interested in me as an individual, rather they were interested in twisting my words to fit their agenda.
What the book doesn't tell you about myself at the time (keep in mind, I was interviewed for this book over a year and a half ago) is that I was 18, living on my own paying all of my own bills, maintaining an apartment, going to work 9-5, and practicing every day with my band. They also didn't mention that I had been accepted and granted a one year deferral (to pursue musical interests) to the University of Miami, which I'm currently attending. The editors of the book give a very unbalanced view into the life that I live and have lived, one of positivity and productivity.
The first correspondence between the producers and I was on September 12th, 2006. It was written to me here on Myspace and said: "We're putting together this super cool photography book of the 100 most interesting teens through the country." To me, that read, you are one of the 100 most interesting teenagers in the country...not someone who was going to be put up alongside a racist, a vampire, Christian crusaders and a prostitute.
100 Young Americans has taught me a valuable lesson that I'd like to pass on to anyone who is ever in a similar situation. Seek media training BEFORE you participate in an interview and request to see both the transcript and the final product before publication to ensure that your words aren't being twisted.
