DJ Blend's 411
My career as a disc jockey started when I was 13 years old. I started
spinning at the Taste of Chicago back in 1985. I was doing mixes on the
radio with DJS who influenced me the most like Hot Mix 5 members Kenny
"Jammin" Jason Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Scott "Smokin'" Silz, Ralph "The
Raz" Rosario and Mickey "Mixin'" Oliver on Chicago's legendary WBMX [and
later on WBMX Competitor WGCI]. Other DJS who influenced my career were Bad
Boy Bill, Mike "Hitman" Wilson and Fast Eddie.
At the beginning of my career I worked in small clubs and performed at house
parties for about three years. After moving to Novato, Calif. In 1989, [a
small city outside San Francisco] I started spinning tunes at my High School
[San Marin High] I worked as a DJ at dances and during lunch periods. After
graduating I started to meet more people in the radio business, especially
those who worked at KMEL 106.1. Among the many who helped make things happen
for me were Joey P.D. Arbagey, M.D.Glenn Aure, Air Jocks Franzen Wong, Trace
Nunes and Chuy Gomez.Soon I started doing guest spots on the air at KMEL 106.1 for about a year.
Just when things started going well for me, I got an offer to work in New
York City. I worked for WBLS 107.5, an all-black owned and operated radio
station. The program director at the time was Lee Michaels, one of the most
respected PDs in the business and my father. While at WBLS, I was on the air
8 to 10 p.m. Saturdays; during the morning mix every day and a traffic jam
mix 5 p.m. Wednesdays. I was able to work with such DJs as Grand Master
Flash, Chuck Chill Out, DJ Ace and others. I also had a chance to spin at
Madison Square Garden before and between acts to crowds of 25,000 people. In
1999 I returned to California and KMEL 106.1 where I had my own shows; 8
p.m. Fridays; 2 a.m. Saturday for Club 106 and the Sunday Kicking it Live at
Five.Later, the Pirate DJs Mind Motion Ivan Rolo 1-3 took me on. We started our
own show called Pirate Radio from midnight to 6 on 106.1 KMEL. I am
currently the proprietor of a mobile DJ operations, maintain a presence
spinning at select clubs as well as parties and run a successful record pool
Currently I operate a mobile DJ service as I maintain residency at select
