As the music community’s eyes slowly start to focus in on the burgeoning southern rock and metal scene down in New Orleans, Louisiana, a typical phenomenon is beginning to rear its head. It happened in San Francisco during the Bay Area thrash explosion of the 80s and again in the 90s with Seattle’s grunge fulmination. Now, musicians and bands are converging from far and wide to the Nola scene in an attempt to emulate and capitalize on an unmistakable and now world-famous sound. The groundwork has been laid by the area’s natives, and as expected, the exploitation of their blood, sweat and tears is underway. New Orleans groove is now in demand.
No Room for Saints do not have to lie to you. They have no need to present you with a fancy “from the deep bayous of New Orleans comes…†fabricated bio. That unmistakable Nola sound currently in much demand is quite simply the fabric of their existence. The five founding members of the band do not have to mimic anything. It comes to them by default.
Vocalist Doug Hanson, drummer Eddie Joubert, bassist Stewart Dowouis, guitarists Mark Dubuisson and David Gamble have been toiling away in various projects in and around southeast Louisiana for decades. They cut their teeth during the early days of the New Orleans metal scene in bands such as Drag Link, Destitute Savior and Infant Slug, and later experimented with other styles of rock in acts like Godhole, Penelope Head and Flowers for Tracy. No Room for Saints is a collaboration of old veterans who have seen trends and friends come and go, watched as their musical contemporaries rose to the top of the industry and lived through terrible tragedy, yet have still maintained an undying passion for expressing themselves through the medium of music. It is the culmination of years of hard work and life lessons. And although a few predictable critics may ultimately attempt to label them “just another Nola swamp groove band,†the fact of the matter remains that this band is a true labor of love by old friends who hold no such intentions. They do, of course, have obvious sonic influences (Black Sabbath, Motorhead, KISS, Kyuss, Clutch, Exhorder, etc.), but the music they create pours naturally from their instruments. Not one second of it is contrived.
As cliché as this may sound to outsiders, No Room for Saints have paid their dues hundreds of times over and expect no favors in return. Their music is made by fans for fans. What you see and hear is exactly what you were meant to receive from them: honesty.
