Artist and composer iLan Azoulai (×זול××™ ×ילן) has just released a new single, “New Beginning,†(התחלה חדשה) in preparation for his forthcoming album. “New Beginning†began playing on Israeli radio in late June. Another single, “Preda,†(פרידה) is set for release in August.
The intimate songs draw on iLan’s personal feelings and experiences while turning back to his musical roots. Producer Nathan Cohen’s instrumentation and harmonies capture the feel of traditional live and analog music. Cohen headed the Israeli folk-rock band The Pure Souls (×”× ×©×ž×•×ª הטהורות ) in the 1970s and went on to produce songs like “Days of Peace†(Lola) (שקט של ימי×) and several songs for Avi Graynick. Cohen is also known for his work with Danni Robas (×“× ×™ רובס) and Matti Caspi (מתי כספי).
iLan grew up in Tel Aviv and currently lives in Boston. He graduated from Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in 1989, where he studied with Izhar Ashdot (×שדות יזהר) and Ilan Mochiac (מוכיח ×ילן).
After graduating from Rimon, iLan wrote, arranged and produced the song “Lies,†(שקרי×) which was released on Israeli radio. He moved to Boston in 1993 and continued his studies in music production and film scoring at the Berklee College of Music, where he scored a feature starring Matt LeBlanc (Friends) in one of his first roles. Today he performs at the legendary Club Passim (formerly Club 47) in Harvard Square and produces the work of local musicians.
