The Atlanta duo known as Tha Nitty Gritty was formed at Benjamin E. Mays High School by Akin "$ire Nitty" Brawner and Brian "Gritty" Hightower back in 2000. They quickly developed a cult following by performing at local high school talent shows and clubs. After numerous shows and open mike sessions, they formed NGE Recordings to create an avenue to market and promote their music. Without any industry guidance, they taught themselves the ins and outs of running an independent label while selling CDs from the trunks of their cars.Their self-titled record Tha Nitty Gritty UndaGround Atlanta Vol. I takes the listener on a trip through the urban communities of Atlanta, Georgia where they were raised. When asked what songs represent the true Nitty Gritty, Sire Nitty responded, "Walk Like a Man represents the true Nitty Gritty because it is hard to be a positive black man in today's society that stereo types you and brain washes you into believing that you are not the King or Queen that you are. In that song, I express how I use the pain and struggle of everyday life to keep me focused on achieving my goals." Brian Gritty, on the other hand, replied, "Stay the Night and Drop it Off represents the true Nitty Gritty because everyone has been in love with someone and felt like they were being taken for granted, but at the same time knew that they could go somewhere else and get the love that they deserve. However, Drop it Off takes you into the heart of the westside of Atlanta and explains exactly what we have to deal with on a daily basis. No matter how hard you work or how positive you think you may be, there is always somebody waiting to catch you slipping so they can feed their family."Tha Nitty Gritty has a universal feel that hip-hop youth from all over the world can appreciate. Through self-determination and strong work ethic, the two 21 year old men are going to take the world by storm.
