*DJMag 2008 – Sankeys voted 17th Best club in the World.
About Sankeys:
There are not many clubs which are situated in the basement of a 200 year old mill, then again there are not many clubs like Sankeys!
Sankeys intends to give the visitor a unique clubbing experience by using quality decor, state of the art ligthing and high quality sound engineering and equipment. The Club is made up of three seperate spaces: The Basement, The Boutique and The Bar with each area offering a different atmosphere, vibe and music policy. The three rooms combine to give Sankeys a capacity of over 1100. Added to that are the outside terrace which offers a chilled atmosphere when needed and also the famous cinema room.
The Basement (Main Room) :
This is the largest space within the club. Exposed brickwork gives a nod to the buildings' past whilst one of the countries leading sound systems combines with and ultra modern LED lighting system to give a truly memorable clubbing experience. The rectangle shape of the room and raised stage allows a large capacity that lends itself well to an intimate and intense atmosphere. The Basement is serviced by bottle bar and can be accessed from both the Bar and the upstairs Boutique.
The Boutique (2nd Room) :
This spacious upper leve fuses an all white decor and warm coloured lighting to create a space unique from the rest of the club. The Boutique offers all the musical options and alternatives of a second room whilst the seating areas and fully serviced bar allow the clubber to relax in comfort. Whether you want to sit down or get down, the Boutique offers something for all tastes.
The Bar (Entrance Area):
The main entrance to Sankeys leads directly into the Bar. This intimate space offers a fully equipped DJ booth, a large serviced bar and snug seating area, the Boudoir, complete with low level lighting and comfortable sections of seating. This is a great area from which to begin your night or to use as a chilled alternative as the rest of the club ups the tempo.
Sankeys is located within the Ancoats district of Manchester, just a few minutes away from Manchester City Centre. Both Piccadilly Train Station and Piccadilly Bus Station are around a 10 minute walk away with a taxi taking only a few minutes and costing a few pounds. Similarly various City Centre bars, restaurants and hotels are a few minutes walk or taxi journey away.
About Mad Hatter Recordings:
Co-founded by Carl Anians & Petrae Foy, specialising in upfront techno and tech-house. Our aim is to bring you good quality music that we would play ourselves, with releases from up and coming, as well as established artists and producers.
With support from the likes of Carl Cox, Derrick May, Tattoo Detectives on promo already, as well as radio play on Carl Cox Global and VONYC, things are already looking bright for Mad Hatter Recordings.
The labels debut release 'Voodoo Chick' is from one of the UK’s hottest up and coming talents, Mindform (aka Phil Caine). Phil has caused quite a storm already as a producer, with tracks being played by the likes of Carl Cox and Darren Emerson. As well as one of his PJC Project tracks being signed to this years Dance Valley 08' compilation. To accompany the release is a guest remix of 'Voodoo Chick' from Kris James. Kris is one the new breed of Manchester based producers to keep an eye on, and a regular DJ at the mighty Sankeys.
Already having two of the three tracks on the EP broadcast worldwide on Carl Cox's Global radio show to over 15 million people, is the 'Petrae Foy & Kenny Shifter - Artist In Space EP'. Petrae was named 'break through artist of 2008' by Carl Cox in DJ Mag.
Also on the release roster is Marcelinho CIC's 'The Sound Is Sexy EP'. Marcelinho CIC is an established producer from Brazil, and has been working alongside some of Brazil’s biggest producers and promoters for quite some time now, and has gained respect world wide as a new producer.
With these first set of release’s set to put this new underground electronic digital dance label on the map, keep an eye out for future artist EP’s from the likes of Roman Zawodny, Caine N Anians, Marcelinho CIC and others, also expect some surprise guest remixes!
About Petrae Foy:
His diverse choice of music along with his highly competent DJ skills - scratching, cutting, quick and flawless mixing makes him stand out from any average DJ.
At the tender age of 21 Petrae managed to secure a residency at the globally renowned Godskitchen and was a main room resident there for two years, playing alongside the likes of, Mauro Picotto , Mistress Barbra, Fergie , James Zabelia, Scarlett Etienne, and last but not least the almighty Carl Cox!
That is where a young Petrae Foy met Carl Cox for the first time, playing a 4hr warm up for him, six months later Petrae read that he was named Carl’s DJ of the year 2004 at the age of only 23. If that wasn’t enough to boast about, he has already got 3 Global Gatherings under his belt, Homelands on the Radio 1 Sound Stage playing alongside Paul Oakenfold, Timo Mass, Fergie and Seb Fontaine.
Petrae has done 3 mixes for the infamous Fergie Show on Radio 1, headlined the Arches in Glasgow for 3000 people on NYE 2004/2005, and that’s just in this country. He’s Also headlined Cream in Dubai new years eve 2005/2006 to 5000 people out doors at the Aerodrome Racecourse! Petrae has memorised crowds abroad playing regularly overseas, at clubs such as Asia’s biggest club brand Zouk. Also bewildered crowds and promoters in Bali, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Venezuela, Dubai, Greece, Brazil, China, and Eastern Europe. To name just a few!
Not content with achieving all the above on just the strength of his magical DJ talent, Petrae has seen a new dawn and in 2006 took a year out working hard in the studio on his own productions. Spending most days working on new ideas for tracks and doing remixes. All this hard work paid off as 2006 has seen a new day for Petrae Foy as a producer, with his very first track ‘What Is It’ co written with Pete Stanley signed to major label Sino/Technasia.
This track triggered a phenomenon with an old colleague Petrae had already won over two years previous, Mr Carl Cox! Who had no hesitation in asking Petrae to appear on his global radio show. In Jan 2006 Petrae went live to over 15 million people in 20 different countries, and his sound went (global). As a result Carl also asked him back as his special guest, to perform a mix on his Christmas show!
Carl Cox’s support hasn’t stopped there, this year Petrae has just finished an itunes podcast for Carl and was the 3rd person in the world to have done one for him. Petrae has been asked at Carl’s request to represent the big man’s Global brand in Holland this year, to play in front of thousands, at the Carl Cox & Friends arena for the World Famous Dance Valley!
Petrae was also asked by one of the UK’s leading labels Toolroom to produce an alternative remix of ‘Sucker DJs - Salvation’, which stormed the charts. This saw a successful close to 2007, alongside being named breakthrough DJ for 2008 by none other than Carl Cox in DJ Magazine.
Recently Petrae teamed up with Phil Caine and Carl Anians (Caine N Anians) to produce this year’s long awaited debut hit track from the trio. With chart entries from top DJs 6 months before its release, as well as an exclusive promo on BBC Radio 1, ‘Kick Back To The Future’ is set to take this summer by storm on top US label ‘Teggno Records’.
Already gaining much respect and hype the trio are about to put the finishing touches to their second project, a remix of ‘Golden Girls - Kinetic’ with one of the UK’s leading dance vocalists Abigail Bailey.
About Carl Anians:
Carl Anians is a name that is fast tracking its way round the underground club scene and has been for quite some time. Known for his energetic genre of beat driven grooves, which combine a mixture of DJ skills, from cutting and EQing to blending tracks together this DJ/Producer is soon to be recognised as an asset to his industry.
Carl has already been recognised by some of the legends in dance, none other than Peter Hook (New Order) had heard Carl perform a breathtaking DJ set, so had no hesitation in asking him to his house for a private VIP party to perform in front of close friends and celebrity dance legends.
2005 saw the Carl complete his first of two successful Ibiza seasons, where he was snapped up straight away by SunSea Bar on Ibiza’s world famous sunset strip. This is where Carl played to the passing hundreds on a daily basis! This Also lead to him DJing the famous pool parties there alongside another Legend Ron Carroll and also the likes of Mutiny and Jim Ryan.
Saving the best till last Carl has also played for the huge brand Manumission for their 11th Birthday after party, and was asked by the promoters to perform second set inside after impressing the terrace crowd so much during his set previously the same morning.
Carl decided to push things forward in 2006 eager to create his own material, and took to the studio. One of the resulting tracks was ‘A Mini Adventure’ co written with good friend Clem. The track was tested out in Ibiza to great effect by various DJs, being signed to Jus Phil’s label Monu-Mental Records on his return to the UK.
But Carl’s achievements don’t lie there, Radio 1’s Mistress De Funk has been quick to snap up some of Carl’s tracks and promo them to well over a million listeners on her fast respected show.
With all these productions behind him and support of these DJ’s, its no wonder tCarl is playing alongside international names. He was asked to do the prestigious warm up for the debut of Valentino Kanzyani, and has played regularly at Manchester’s top dog venue Sankeys with the likes of Kate Lawler, Mickey Slim, Mistress De Funk, Jus Phil and Petrae Foy just to name a few.
Carl's latest track ‘Kick Back To The Future’ in collaboration with studio partners Petrae Foy and Phil Caine, has been gaining massive support from various DJs, including none other than the big man himself Carl Cox!
Coxy charted the track at number 2 in his personal chart, along with plays at some of the biggest festivals and dance floors across the globe. Including none other than Space in Ibiza, which was broadcast live on Coxy's Global radio show going out to over 15 million listeners, where Coxy dropped the track not once, but TWICE in one night in different rooms!!!
With chart entries by top DJs six months before its release, as well as an exclusive promo on BBC Radio 1, ‘Kick Back To The Future’ is set to take this summer by storm, on top US label ‘Teggno Records’.
Already gaining much respect and hype the trio are about to put the finishing touches to their second project, a remix of ‘Golden Girls - Kinetic’ with one of the UK’s leading dance vocalists Abigail Bailey.

Jake Kaufman :

Jake Kaufman has been DJing since 2006 and has exploded onto the scene at a remarkable pace. Since gaining residencies with some of the top local clubs and promoters he has graced the decks at venues such as The Egg (london), Space (Leeds), Miss Moneypenny’s (Birmingham), Garlands (Liverpool) and last but by no means least, Sankeys (Manchester).

Early in his DJ career Jake was making waves and his skills behind the wheels of steel did not go un-noticed for long as he was soon elevated to play at clubs in the undisputed DJ Mecca – Ibiza. Here he played at the elegant and sophisticated El Devino for Miss Moneypennys and many others including Pukka Up at Es Paradis and Garlands at Eden.

Jakes style of Djing is timeless as he likes to fill the floor with driving jacking beats influenced by the likes of Joey Youngman and Brian Jones. He has been billed and played alongside some of the best known DJ’s and acts in his career including Brandon Block, Paul Woolford, Maison, Mistress De Funk, Bodyrox and supported by live P.As from artists such as Angie Stone.

Paul C:

Paul C is an up and coming DJ from Manchester. After making his public debut less than a year ago, in June 2007, he has quickly progressed up the ladder from bedroom DJ to Club DJ to Sankeys resident. It has been a whirlwind 12 months for Paul, quickly gaining confidence he has progressed from warming up at small venues such as Budda Bar, Atlas Bar and and Kode to gaining a residency at one of the greatest clubs in the World.

Paul made his club debut at J2 in Bolton and then went on to play some of Manchester’s best known clubs, including North and Alter Ego where he also gained the respect of various promoters which resulted in almost immediate residencies for 3 different nights. Toward the end of 2007 Paul was playing at various events and clubs every weekend including the legendary Miss Moneypenny’s.

In 2008 Paul made his debut at the highly regarded Sankeys, Manchester on 23rd Feb and hasn’t looked back. His performance gained him a residency and he now plays there on a monthly basis. Now a regular guest DJ at various club nights in and around Manchester he is injecting his energetic performances onto many a dance floor “Anyone who has seen me DJ will tell you I do more than just play tunes, I get involved with the crowd and make sure I give them 110%, just as I expect from them. I have seen DJ's who don't even smile during their sets and I just think 'why are they bothering?' If you don’t look like you are enjoying it as the DJ then how can you expect the crowd to? As the DJ you are responsible for whether hundreds of people have a great night or an ok night, or even a bad night! It is a huge responsibility and one which I do not take lightly. At the end of the day I am a clubber who just happens to DJ and therefore I know what the crowd want and when they want it. Well, most of the time anyway!”

Lance Cunningham:

Lance Cunningham has been DJing since 2001. Making his public debut at a small club in Bolton, The Academy, Lance became hooked on playing to a crowd and has been on the way up ever since, playing various venues in and around Manchester, Bolton and London.

Lance's inspiration came from listening to his Dad's tracks from the age of 5 & his Brother's mixes from the age of 10. Lance began buying records from the age of 13 and even ventured into promoting his own nights from the age of 18 and has been behind some succesful nights in Manchester including the most recent, Bad Influence @ Sankeys.

His inspiration for Djing is quite simple - "Many a night I would be stood on a club dance floor thinking 'That was a bad mix' or 'They should have mixed something else in there'. So that's what made me start. I wanted to take the knowledge I had aquired on the dance floor into the DJ booth."

The style of music that Lance plays is House - the chunkier the better! This is where his passion lies and this is visible in his performances. “I like to play it funky, deep and dirty and throw in some Latino beats here and there for good measure.”

Voodoo Circus Events Launch Night -
Defected In The House, Fri. 8th July '08

About Defected:

It would be hard right now to imagine house music without Defected Records. From a small office in Soho, the label has become a key player -perhaps even the key player- on the international dance music scene, attracting some of the greatest talents working in the industry, regularly trumping the majors with crossover hits and media attention, and never far from the boxes of the world’s best DJs. In seven short years, the independent label has gone some way to achieving label boss Simon Dunmore’s vision of an imprint worthy to stand aside the labels that inspired him, from Motown and Philly in the soul era to Strictly Rhythm.

The Defected Records story started when A&R man Dunmore and promotions specialist Janet Bell found themselves at a crossroads in their careers. They’d made a great success of running AM:PM, the dance division of A&M Records, and when the latter was taken over and closed by a multinational corporation with little sentiment for music, they decided they’d ‘...come to the end of the road with majors,’ says Simon, who had also had several years of A&R work at Cooltempo under his belt, ‘and it felt like the right time to do something for ourselves.’ In essence, they ‘defected’.

The first release, Soulsearcher ‘I Can’t Get Enough’ was launched on January 1st 1999 and augured well for the fledgling company’s health, going to no.8 in the national charts, demonstrating Dunmore’s astute judgement of the dance market, and subsequent releases consistently achieved respectable chart placings, with the early Defected discography reading like a roll call of club classics: Powerhouse feat. Duane Harden ‘What You Need’, MAW feat. India ‘To Be In Love’, Paul Johnson ‘Get Get Down’, Eddie Amador ‘Rise’, Bob Sinclar ‘Feel For You’, ATFC feat. Lisa Millett ‘Bad Habit’, Kings of Tomorrow ‘Finally’ and so on, culminating in a no.1 hit with Roger Sanchez ‘Another Chance’ in July 2001.

Whereas some labels may have started to rest on their laurels by now, this no.1 hit actually inspired some changes at Defected: ‘We weren’t able to celebrate that success as much as I would have liked,’ says Simon, ‘...because Roger had so many other obligations. It was at this point that I realised that to really capitalise on a hit record you need to develop your artists “in-house”. If you’re there right at the beginning you’ve more chance of still being there when the artist makes it big.’

Subsequent signings like Banda Sonorra [who had the the irresistible ‘Guitarra G’ a non-chart record that’s hardly ever stopped being played in the clubs] and DJ Chus would re-appear with remixes for other signings, while diverse artists/producers like Bob Sinclar, DJ Gregory, Junior Jack, Martin Solveig, Dubtribe Sound System and Sandy Rivera have all followed unforgettable singles with well-received albums, proving Dunmore to be a man of his word: ‘Whenever I ask someone to sign with us, I always get them to consider all the other artists who have stuck with us for so long already. That doesn’t happen if you treat people badly. In some cases, I’m still working with people I’ve had a professional relationship with now now for over ten years.’ Sandy Rivera, aka Kings of Tomorrow, perhaps represents the logical extension of this policy of nurturing talent. Following the runaway success of ‘Finally’ he moved to England and is now esconced [professionally anyway] in Defected’s basement!

The label recently reached the landmark 100th release, and Dunmore chose to honour his roots in soul music by choosing Blaze featuring Barbara Tucker ‘Most Precious Love’ for the occasion. ‘It’s so representative of what Defected is all about. Blaze are classic house producers who I’ve always admired but not had the opportunity to work with enough before. Barbara Tucker is a great house vocalist, and Dennis Ferrer who did the mix is the new kid on the block, keeping the label looking towards the future. I’m very proud of it.’

The same philosophy is also exemplified by Eivissa ‘06, the latest instalment of Defected’s hugely successful ‘In The House’ series. Whereas other releases in the series have represented artists/producers/DJs and franchises with whom Defected has a strong and sympathetic relationship -Joey Negro, DJ Gregory, Soulfuric, Soul Heaven etc.- Eivissa ‘06 is Defected In The House, pure and simple. Mixed by Simon, Eivissa conjures the spirit of Defected’s Tuesday nights at Pacha Ibiza, with a mixture of new signings and stone classics.

Defected club nights now tour the world with DJ/artists on the roster representing the label under the ‘Defected In The House’ banner. The flagship nights were initially at the Ministry of Sound for three consecutive years and later at Pacha in London for a further year in 2005. During the summer of 05 the aforementioned Tuesday nights at its sister club in Ibiza, arguably the best and most renowned club in the world. This newly-formed relationship represents a tremendous step for the label, as well as offering a strong, more soulful alternative for clubbers to the harder sounds that have come to dominate on the island. It’s proved a wildly popular and successful venture with some record breaking attendances in 06.

A sub-label, Fluential born early in 2002 and puts out some of the tougher, trackier, more tribal-tinged house that comes Defected’s way, with a new artist roster and release schedule due soon. The In The House label is another offshoot, showcasing some of the key new tracks from the compilations. Diverse producers and remixers of the calibre of Dimitri From Paris, Kenny Dope, Danny Krivit and Jazzy Jeff have all given a taste of their talents with exclusive mixes of selections from the compilation albums, and these singles as singles have been perorming well with sales in excess of 600,000 units so far. Also added to the label roster in 2005 was BlackWiz, Sandy Rivera’s original record label, Code Red, DJ Spens Baltimore imprint and Copyright Recordings headed by Sam Holt and Gavin Mills.

Other compilation series on Defected proper include the popular Most Rated compilations, geared towards the crossover market and crammed with current dance hits, and the new Connected series designed to give a wider profile to Defected artists through compilation albums in their name. The latter launches with Copyright and Jay J, in-demand producer/remixes whose work has already had a huge impact on the specialist scene.

Defected’s achievements have regularly been lauded in the press and by the dance music industry itself. Recent recognition has come with the awards of Best Label and Best International Event at the UK’s House Music Awards, and Best Global Dance Label at the International House Music Awards. In 2005 Defected was again rewarded for Best Label for the second time, adding to best clubnight to the trophies sitting on the mantelpiece.

In 2005 it was decide that some chest beating was essential to fully exhibit what defected were all about so a historic venue was chosen to hold this a special event, The 100 Club, Oxford St, known by many as ‘the most famous music venue in the world’ was the place. A live label showcase was organised that focused on the LIVE element of the label. There were performances by Reel People, Defected’s first full band signing who performed tracks form their album ‘Second Guess’ with a full 9 piece band. There were also appearances too from the legendary vocalists Barbara Tucker who hosted the event and a legendary wild performance by the infamous Elmer ‘Lee’ Fields who you will know from Martins Solveig’s club smashes ‘Jealousy’, ‘I’m a good man’ and ‘Everybody’.

Defected now stands in an almost unique position for an independent dance label, with a globally recognised brand that’s synonymous with quality for the discerning clubber, an unparallelled roster of production talent and an ongoing programme of artist development, and a pivotal role in shaping the tastes of the market. It looks like Defected will be in the house for some time to come!
About Copyright:

“We play sounds with worldwide appeal. You can drop them from Portugal to Australia to Japan. It’s soulful house music with a global vibe.”

Stalwarts of the house scene for almost a decade, London based DJ/production duo Sam Holt and Gavin Mills – aka Copyright – are about to jump to the next level with the release of their debut album, ‘Voices and Visions’. An assured collection of soulful house, classic song writing, with latin, afrobeat, disco, funk and tech influences and outstanding vocal performances from a stellar cast of collaborators, ‘Voices and Vision’s’ is set propel Copyright into the super league of global house players. Having their first proper release on the hugely influential US label Soulfuric back in 2000, the boys proceeded to put out a slew of quality tracks on that and several other labels (including their own imprint, Copyright Recordings) in the early noughties.

Tracks like ‘Good For You’ feat Angie Brown, ‘Bulo’ with longtime friend and percussion collaborator Shovel and ‘Release Yourself’ set the pace, while their move to Defected in 2005 saw them jump up a gear with tracks like ‘He Is’, ‘Bring Me Love’ and ‘I Pray’. The international recognition they received from these releases culminated in Defected boss Simon Dunmore asking Copyright to mix the 2007 ‘Miami In The House’ compilation.

Distilling the Copyright sound while showcasing their mixing prowess and nose for what makes a great party, it went on to sell more than 30, 000 copies globally. Which begs the question, with so much success, how come it’s taken them so long to finally deliver their debut long player? “I think we wanted to wait until the time was completely right,” says Gavin. “We were quite happy developing our sound, gaining production experience and honing our DJing. Then out of the blue Simon said ‘you guys should do an album. Why don’t you give us three maybe four new tracks, we’ll put it together with some of the stuff we’ve released before.’ It evolved and we’ve ended up with about eight new tracks.” And it’s been more than worth the wait.

Sublimely blending their trademark soulful sound with a host of other influences, the album is a reflection of their varied and universally-appealing DJ sets. “There are tracky parts, classic song writing, percussive stuff, deep elements and even some hip house!” enthuses Sam. The hip house comment refers to the inclusion of original acid and hip house pioneer K.C. Flightt, alongside new school rapping sensations Mr V and Miss Patty and old school don, the inimitable Jazzie B. “We wanted to represent a bit of UK flavour. It’s great to have an English accent on a house record. We went down to Brixton and came back with that iconic sound,” says a wide-eyed Sam of the band’s experience of working with the Soul II Soul legend. Elsewhere, longtime cohorts Shovell, Imaani and Tasita D’mour make an appearance, ensuring continuity for the original Copyright fans, while all brining something new and unique to the mix as the Copyright family pushes the sound forward. In keeping with their global ethos, expect to see the boys DJing around the world to promote the album in 2008, including a number of live performances with the album’s guest artists – cementing ‘Voices and Visions’ position as a key release for 2008 in Britain and overseas. At a time when the UK’s reputation abroad isn’t all that. It’s good to see some of Her Majesty’s subjects doing their bit to spread the love.
