About Me

"I was born in the District..."
I'm a DC-bred Red-and-Black-blooded activist. I sing, rhyme, compose, produce, and fight the good fight. My life is built on a foundation of beauty and justice, which I consider one and the same. I live for music and family. I have a twin brother- Super J- who is my ace. Couldn't live without him. I carry his picture wherever I go, usually as a bookmark. His face is currently holding my place in the book "Garvey & Garveyism".
I typically prefer spending time with children to adults. It's just easier to relate. You can find me at the kid's table, trading war stories... "How'd you get that scar?" Video games, blood-and-guts anime, the original Transformers.
I don't watch much television... I'm a fan of sports, so that's about all I use the tube for. I'm also known to watch a movie or two. I enjoy boxing matches, checking out the underground hip-hop scene, and staring out the windows of the Orange Line Metro.
I'm not in the market for a relationship and I don't have any kids. Wholly focused on the task at hand. I'm always down to make a new friend- especially one who won't give me a hard time about the Phoenix Suns and the Oakland Raiders.

Nia Lewis is a Washington DC-area singer/pianist/lyricist/poet/activist. In freestyle tradition, she learned to play piano by ear-- and carries that improvisational energy into her work. When asked about influences, she invariably spouts a list of consistently creative harmonic songwriters (think Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Laura Nyro, Donny Hathaway, OutKast) and soulful provokers of thought (the incomparable Phyllis Hyman, Talib Kweli, Olu Dara, Ursula Rucker, KRS-One).
Not one to shy away from the light, you can find Nia on membership listings from the Washington Performing Arts Society to the Human Rights Campaign. She is a self-described "hip-hop-infused eclectic", and every deeply-held belief makes itself felt in her words and sounds.
