Loyalty has been a lost commodity amongst the music industry. In a world of ever changing trends and business partners, DJ Drastic has always stayed a cut above the rest. The saying that loyalty is the key to any man's success remains true in the heart of New York City's Heat. Always staying ardent to his passion, his love for Hip Hop music brought him to great heights. It has been seven years since that significant feeling instilled within his soul at the Limelight venue in NYC. The bass took over my body and I never felt anything like that. I knew this was what I needed to do with my life, says the self-proclaimed Untouchable one. On that warm summer night, he received his first opportunity to show the world what they were missing. Although young and inexperienced, Drastic motivated the crowd to the fullest of his potential displaying an immense amount of musical versatility and personality on the microphone.
Born Daniel Johnson, Drastic became a man on the streets of Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a single parent home was difficult for Drastic, as he would become a victim of poverty at a young age. His Colombian, Puerto Rican, and Scandinavian heritage exposed him to all types of world music growing up. Drastic would rise above the statistics by age 14 and began living a better life. Confused and curious, he began to engage in criminal activities. At the age of 18, he came across a baby picture of himself sitting on turntables. He realized that the father who did not play any significant role in his life was a DJ. "I think that’s where the love came from. It was something about those spinning things that influenced me as an infant I guess", says Drastic as he laughs intermittently. The dream of being a DJ first started surfacing in early '96. Drastic would write lyrics for hours on end, way before his peers even acknowledged the thought of rap music carrying them through their adult lives. He was originally talented as an emcee and would battle local emcees but realized that this was a trend catching on rapidly. His years of musical dedication detoured as Hip Hop music started taking its commercial turn in '97. Drastic knew there was something out there that could satisfy him while still being true to the music that he loved. In the years following his transition, Drastic would frequently visit music stores buying every cassette available. It was his priority to support the industry with the illegal revenue accumulated from his mischievous years as an adolescent. He started making cassettes for friends with the newest music on them and specialized in making 120-minute tapes. The cassettes were a huge hit amongst his peers and he immediately started saving the profit to invest into his first set of DJ equipment.
No one ever thought that what started as a personal dream would turn into a full-fledged career. DJ Drastic originally hit the nightclub scene in 2000 as part of an elite promotion team. Unfortunately, he realized that the world was not ready for his movement. He took a year off while struggling to find his place within nightlife. Abandoned by the team he once called was his own; he made a promise to return to the game stronger than ever before. Drastic began to work on his mixing techniques as well as stage presence. Soon after, every local hot spot was paying DJ Drastic to rock their parties and events. The local club scene was only a morsel of the bigger picture that he had strived towards for the future. Drastic needed new outlets to share his talents with the world and with the assistance of a mutual friend stumbled upon a radio show looking for new talent. In 2003, Emilio Sparks contacted DJ Drastic and challenged his urban stomping grounds. He started getting into Drastic's head to see what the hype was surrounding the man. Emilio Sparks at the time was the host of the highly popular, Dego Show which broadcasted on 88.9FM in select areas of NYC and nationwide via the internet. Once Emilio got the chance to experience NYC's Heat, he knew the fire was full circle. Emilio invited Drastic to join the broadcast on a weekly basis. Drastic would eventually bring his own flavor to the show and provide his musical versatility to a wider variety of audiences. He created The Grind Session. A set created by Drastic specializing in exclusive heat and all the songs you wish you heard more often. The sets also inspired new generation camps. Emilio Sparks & DJ Drastic brought The Dego Show to the top and recorded the highest ratings in the station's 25-year history since the collaboration. In recent years, DJ Drastic has become a commodity to the music industry. He deals with multiple record labels and artists on a daily basis. He has respect amongst the Hip Hop community and a large following. You can hear him worldwide daily on AOL Radio. The Untouchable DJ Drastic has recently signed on to broadcast exclusive live mixshow sets via Swurv Radio. In addition, multiple internet radio stations air DJ Drastic’s sets in syndication daily. He has achieved features in some of the biggest magazine publications internationally. Drastic has done many shows for some of today’s biggest Hip Hop acts and also tours with American King/Capitol recording artist MIMS. You can spot him across the United States and in the United Kingdom from time to time. The music industry and mass public perceive Drastic as one of the most sought after nightclub DJs in New York. At only 24, He has appeared at every major nightclub within the Tri-State area including Avalon (Limelight), Deep (Venue), IKON (Exit), Pacha (Sound Factory), Speeed, and Spirit to name a few. DJ Drastic resurrected nightlife at Avalon in NYC when he became their resident DJ in 2004 & 2005. In the streets, he has made a name for himself by competing in numerous DJ competitions along with the highly praised DMC battles. The mix tape market is no exception. The recent success of his, DJ Drastic for Mayor: Version 1.1 project proves that the streets are buzzing. The project moved two thousand units within the first week of its independent release and received overwhelming support via the World Wide Web. The Coalition Network Presents DJ Drastic's Bag of Tricks, compilation disc is currently set for a Fall 2007 release and will feature classic material along with the hottest exclusives in the game. The disc's independent distribution will serve as an outlet to the streets and allow DJ Drastic to remain in touch with the consumer.
In addition to his distinguished position as National Director of Artist Relations for The BumSquad DJs, The Coalition Network was formulated to help carry DJ Drastic's brand name to the next level. This is a movement created to help carry a generation of industry executives and DJs to the top of their field. After incorporating a strong promotion team and dedicated studio affiliates, Drastic once again positioned his newly acquired business affiliates and company to rise to the top of the industry.
