My sister Kenna was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in August of 2007. She finished her chemotherapy treatments in January of 2008 and we are ecstatic to report that as of February 2008 she has been declared cancer free. Doctors will continue to frequently monitor her health, but for now, we are all enjoying a newfound zest for life!
There is no history of breast cancer specifically in my family (although there have been other cancers.) I encourage all women to have regular screenings, even if they don't think they are at risk. We didn't think my sister was at risk either.
We are not the victims of our destiny; we are the authors.

I'm a New Yorker at heart and one day would like to live on the East Coast, but right now I'm concentrating my efforts on getting a degree. I have two awesome kids, an 18 year old boy and a 10 year old girl. I currently have a roommate I've known since high school. We haven't driven each other insane yet, but I'm doing my best!
I am an advocate for Gay Rights. I believe that all people should all be afforded the same civil rights, and these rights include (but certainly aren't limited to) state sanctioned marriage or civil unions; whichever terminology you prefer, the option to engage in it and all rights that come with it should be extended equally to every citizen of this country, gay, straight, bi, or otherwise. Advocating equal rights has become very important to me in recent years. I have close friends and family members who are members of the GLBT community, and I'm tired of seeing them treated as lesser people because of their sexual identity. I respect differing opinions as long as they respect mine, but I have no tolerance for hate speech or discrimination. If you can't get past that, you're in the wrong blog.
Freedom
My two dogs
tied to a tree
by a ten-foot leash
kept whining and howling for an hour
till I let them off.
Now they are lying quietly on the grass
a few feet further from the tree
and they haven't moved since I let them go.
Freedom may be
only an idea
but it's a matter of principle
even to a dog.

Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?
- Ernest Gaines
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
