How I made my profile:
I used Dave & Jay's amazing myspace editor .
Myspace won't allow us to upload more than six songs onto the myspace music player, so we went out in search of another one. Reverbnation is kind enough to allow us to upload plenty of music and place their widget wherever we want. We want it here.
We are both self-taught on the guitar, and play "by ear". Our production is pretty simple...a straight, one-take recording while sitting around the dining table. Ever now and then, I'll get wild and crazy, download a free version of MixPad, and add an echo effect. Otherwise, it's pretty much WYSIWYG.
We freely admit that most of our songs are auto-biographical. You may notice what appears to be a major conflict in the subject matter, i.e. drugs and Jesus. I am here to tell you that Jesus is quite the mystery. Why he grabbed ahold of us is anybody's guess. We don't exactly conform to the typical idea of the word "Christian". It's a shame that Jesus has been portrayed as someone that came to gather up the goody-two-shoes. Quite the contrary! He enjoyed hanging out with some real characters. Personally, I believe that if he was here today, once again...few people would recognize him...and he'd be condemned as a homeless drunkard and criminal, just as he was 2,000 years ago. I want to go on a reintroducing Jesus campaign because I think he's still getting a bum rap. Jesus was, and still is, a radical.
POSSIBLE PBS MINI DOCU-DRAMA BIO:
Fox and Ruthanna grew up during the societal upheaval of the 1960s and 70s. Both became enraptured with the hippie movement, peace, sub-culture, political interests, societal change, spiritual seeking, the music that defined the era, and the various natural herbs and other plants that helped to enhance it all. Despite actually having lived within miles of each other in not just one, but several, Texas cities, Ruthie and Fox never once crossed paths. Until, that is, a cool April Fools Day back in 1996. Finally, the two had landed at the same location. Not exactly prime property either. They were each doing a repeat appearance (and we're not talking music gig) at a popular Austin, Texas detox/rehab center. So, the nights could be quite dull, until Fox would bring his guitar downstairs and then the merriment would begin. This was to be the very beginning of a total and complete life change for the both of them.
Eventually, they married. And over the next 10 years, they spent much of their time attempting to overcome the, well, basically, the mess they'd made of their lives. With their addictions now out of the way, life should be grand: however, they both stumbled over life at every turn. Repeatedly making the wrong decision, acting on impulse, or not acting at all due to paralyzing anxieties, or simply the frustration suffered due to the oppression of the system itself. Our society is not geared towards people actually SURVIVING the ravages of addiction. So it seemed they were both disabled geniuses, frustrated by their seeming inability to truly OVERCOME. But, there was still the music, and art, history, and writing, collecting, cultures and religions to study, and books to read, family relationships to mend, and friends to make.....
Perseverance can be a long, winding, and at times, lonely road. But its destination is sweet. Finally, with their feet now firmly planted, and some sense of direction, they are ready to move to the next chapter of their lives. And it's going to be a good one.
OUR INTERESTS:
Ruthie is fascinated by various cultures, religions, belief systems, arts, art history, dance. I love folk art, folk music, folk dance. I appreciate regular people doing the best they can with what they have. I study the Catholic Church, and other religions, such as the Jewish faith, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Zorastarism. I question WHY we accept, without question, the religious beliefs handed to us by our culture. I want the truth...even if it doesn't exist in my own little world. I will find it, if I haven't already.
Fox is into pharmacopea and World War II history, especially loves artifacts from WWII. He has a very large photo collection, along with a Nazi flag that is covered in signatures of the Allied men that TOOK IT DOWN from Bielberg Airport. Fox is German, and he seeks to understand what happened then. He is forever reading, studying, and such. He loves hunting for arrowheads, and enjoys soccer. Many people assume that Fox is a nickname; however, it is a family name. He is the great-grandson of OSCAR J. FOX, the American music composer of famous cowboy songs, such as, Home on the Range, Git Along Little Doggies, and he also composed the University of Texas fight song, The Eyes of Texas.
HISTORY, of all types, is a mutual interest of ours. We also both enjoy treasure hunting, be it garage sales, flea markets, digging in the dirt, or even a good dumpster dive every now and then. No shame here, as we have been blessed with some truly incredible finds. Being able to find something special in an unexpected place is....serendipitous! And oh so fun.

Pretty simple here. Ruthie and Fox, both on guitar. Probably all that we need is: MORE COWBELL!
Influences:
Do you live in East Texas or just wish you did? If so, check out
www.GotLongview.com
- it's a city guide site where you can find local information, business listings, local music, local art, and local events...plus, lots of great articles. Lots of free promotion available too.
We were both greatly influenced by the music of the 60s and 70s. Our all-time favorite is, of course, Bob Dylan. We believe him to be a true gift to the world. It seems that no other artist has had such a profound impact on our culture, contributed so much towards the creation of new music, endured what? 50 years? in the music industry, plus actually lived to see himself garner legendary status. Amazing. I don't think I could actually name a favorite Bob Dylan song because every time I hear one of his songs, I say "Oh...yeah....THAT'S my favorite song of his", but I have to say that "Subterranean Homesick Blues" is, well, one of my favorites....check out the lyrics and learn everything you ever needed to know about life. Here's the video for you:

We also both love the British rock, folk rock, and old punk, sound. Other artists that have influenced our lives, our thoughts, and our very being, would include:
John Prine,Tom Petty, James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Van Morrison, Buffalo Springfield, Leo Kottke, Cat Stephens, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, the Moody Blues, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Jefferson AIRPLANE, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, EmmyLou Harris, the Hollies, The Yardbirds, Roy Orbison, the Righteous Brothers, Mama's and the Papa's, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Neil Young, the Byrds, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, especially, John Lennon, and George Harrison, Eric Burdon, the Doors, Traffic, Rolling Stones, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, and the 13th Floor Elevators, Santana, Ozzie, and Black Sabbath,
IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT FOX AND RUTHANNA HAVE BEEN SEEN DANCING AROUND THE HOUSE, SINGING TO THEIR DOGS WHILE LISTENING TO THE FUN AND TALENTED B-52S, Yes, it's true, our dogs think we are IDIOTS. But, check it out....

Now see there? You just can't help but get up and groove. It's a human thang...our dogs wouldn't understand.
And then we have, the Butthole Surfers, Alanis Morrisette, Tracey Chapman, Sarah McLaughlin, Jewel, Mary Gauthier, Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sugar Ray, Lenny Kravitz, Stevie and Jimmy Vaughn, my good friend Lou Ann Barton, dear friends Firesighn theater, Jethro Tull, Queen, The Verve, All The Mississippi Delta Bluesmen, and the legendary Robert Johnson, (we have an old lp of his from the 50s). Collecting music is another hobby of ours.

Sounds Like: This is a hard call, as I don't really think either of us attempts to sound like anyone. For the most part, I believe we have a relatively original sound. Ruthie has been compared to Neko Case, and also Jewel, but if there is even a hint of truth to this, I'd have to say that I am quite raw and undeveloped in any manner of comparison to either of the two....and feel presumptuous to claim even that. Fox has been told he has a sound similar to Tom Petty, and I frequently hear the richness of a Van Morrison sound with him also.
I like it best when Fox and I sing and play together. We come up with some interesting harmonic sounds, and unusual compositions. We work well with each other. And it is our greatest love. Music IS what brought us together. For your viewing pleasure.....This is a great video done by our friend, Dennis James. You can find him here on Myspace also. We both LOVE his music, and we really get a kick out of this well produced video. We hope you enjoy it.
