Biography: JOHN ALFRED LONGLOTT, Filmmaker/Composer, (1966 - ) John Alfred Longlott was born in Reading Pennsylvania, of Canadian and American parents: his mother a Toronto-born homemaker and businesswoman, and his father an Italian/American entrepreneur. A composer, poet, percussionist, pianist, producer, engineer, and filmmaker John began experimenting with drums, at age 6, and made his performance debut at age 9, with a jazz ensemble at a Brigantine New Jersey motor inn. Throughout his childhood he experimented with “sound on sound” recorders, and super-8 cameras and projectors, sometimes making his own home-movies. As a musician, he went on to perform at private parties, high schools, night clubs, and colleges, which includes warming up for Philadelphia's ‘The Dead Milkmen’ and operated his own recording studio, sometimes recording local talent, and extensively recording his own compositions. MUSIC STUDIES: Mr. Longlott studied piano and theory with the late Katherine Schiffner, and with Phyllis Coolick, Elizabeth Lutley, and Xun Pan, (formerly of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing). In his teens he briefly studied voice at the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts, and drums with jazz drummer/teacher Robert Clausman, but is mainly self taught as a drummer, percussionist and composer. His teens and early twenties saw him performing with neighbourhood pick-up bands and in bars and clubs learning from more experienced blues and rock musicians. Before leaving the united states to settle in St, John's Newfoundland he briefly studied music theory, with composer Andrew Bleckner. College and University: From 1996 to 2003 Mr. Longlott studied liberal arts at Reading Area Community College and Penn State University (Berks). In 2002 he began pursuing a secondary education degree at Millersville University, but abandoned that in 2004 to fulfill a dream of living in Canada and of settling in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. Awards/Accolades: In addition to winning a rating of "Superior" in The American College of Musicians International, Annual Composition Contest, for his composition: 'In Your Garden he has received acclaim for his score of the motion picture: Highfalutin, as well as his theme for a 1980s regional Ace Award winning cable movie review program: Thumbs Up Thumbs Down. 'Longlott has also received critical acclaim for his debut 1993 compact disc: Ode to the Poets' Quest for Death. He has performed in numerous U.S. and Canadian venues including New York's CBGB, Toronto's El Mocambo, and more recently at LSPU Hall and the annual Peace Accord in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador. Film Scores: He has composed music for the short films 'FISHENEMY' and 'GET REEL', and 'STARE OF DESTINY' by St. John's filmmaker: Michael Williams, and more recently a short film titled: RUN AWAY MOZART, by LUKE PATTERSON. FILM STUDIES: In addition to experimenting with Super- 8 films and equipment, as a child, in 2006 Mr. Longlott studied filmmaking at (NIFCO) The Newfoundland Independent Film Cooperative, where his script was chosen to be made into the class film by his classmates. This resulted in his scriptwriting and acting debut and a film titled ‘FISHENEMY’. He has also worked as a grip on Michael Williams’ ‘Stare of Destiny’ and other NIFCO related films. FILMMAKING: On December 14th 2008 John Alfred Longlott and a six member cast, and a small volunteer Nifco crew shot 'Longlott's first film: 'FIRST LOVE'. From an original script written and directed by John Alfred Longlott, the film was shot on location in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador Canada. Mr. Longlott made the film in co-operation with The Newfoundland Independent Filmmaker's Co-Operative (the First Time Filmmaker Program). 'FIRST LOVE' has been submitted to the Canada International Film Festival, the Air Canada Enroute Student Film Festival, and The Toronto International Film Festival. He plans to submit the film to several other festivals in Canada and abroad. The film will be formally screened in downtown St. John's Newfoundland, through NIFCO, at 'The Star of the Sea' sometime near August '09. Mr. Longlott is currently engaged in the writing of a new script with the intent to apply to Nifco’s 'Picture Start Program', and he hopes to be making another film, soon.
