Rumen Statkov was born on April 23, 1961, in Bourgas.1975–1980 Studies in the Fine Arts High School in Sofia.1980–1985 Organizes nine individual exhibitions in Sofia, Bourgas, Varna and Michourin. Participates in more than 20 national exhibitions; becomes member of the YAA.1985–1990 Graduates from the Art Academy, Fine Arts Department, where he studied under the guidance of Prof. P. Chouklev. Actively participates in the organization of the first students’ gallery in Sofia.1990–1992 Makes illustrations for many books. Writes texts and makes the illustrations of a series of children’s books. Works in political advertising (posters, calendars, videos and other projects approved and implemented in the field of Bulgarian advertising).
Creates over 1000 drawings, portraits, cartoons and compositions of historical importance in the new history of Bulgaria.
Roumen Statkow is the first painter to exhibit at the National Assembly (drawings, psychological portraits and cartoons of contemporary politicians). The MP Club Hall in the National Assembly opened doors for a series of independent exhibitions.
Together with the Bulgarian National Television at the 6 Shipka hall Roumen Statkow organizes the first exhibition with drawings, portraits, cartoons and compositions from the Grand National Assembly.In 1993 Statkow takes part in the making of 7 films at the National TV – “Roumen Statkow – Pictures and Visionâ€. These are pictorial expressions, inspired by the voice of the world-famous basso Boris Christoff and the folklore ensemble “Filip Koutevâ€, directed by Hacho Boyadjiev. These films have been used to present Bulgaria in Japan.1993–1995 For the first time at the Hall of the Union of the Architects in Bulgaria he displays his cycle of 33 black and white paintings, 100/80 cm format, “Message to the Worldâ€. This is the fruit of seven years of work, representing an attempt at an artistic interpretation of contemporary life. Several presentations of the “Message†were organized together with the British Council, Open Society, the municipalities of Varna and Bourgas, Areta Gallery, the National Club of the EU Friends of which the artist is member.In 1995 Roumen Statkow presents his own project of a new national state emblem, imbued with national symbols.
In that period the artist creates several frescoes and stained glass in Sofia and Varna, implements many orders for painting compositions in public places – a portrait of David Sasunski for Armenia, Ramayana for an Indian restaurant in Sofia, a mural in the DCSB, a portrait of St. Sofia, etc.
Roumen Statkow is author of a cycle of psychological portraits of world-famous personalities (Mozart, Shakespeare, Salvador Dali, Nostradamus), of series of portraits of nature (the sea, the waves, the wood, etc.), series of portraits of animals, birds and plants. The artist paints a cycle of portraits of eternity (portrait of the sky, the air, the earth, the fire, etc.).
The artist manifests his interest in the activities and lives of prominent contemporary figures – he paints King Juan Carlos of Spain, among others.In 1998 at the 44th NATO General Assembly in Lisbon an idea of the author was approved related to one of his works. In Lisbon Roumen Statkow opened another independent exhibition of portraits of prominent personalities who had attended the Assembly among whom H.M. Simeon II, Alfred Caen, the Mayor of Lisbon, etc.
He has painted over 800 portraits owned by famous contemporary figures among whom Bill and Hilary Clinton, from whom he has received letters of gratitude, J. Solana, Gen. W. Clarke, M. Tatcher, H. Kohl, M. Gorbachev, J. Chiraque, etc.Roumen Statkow is author of 50 solo exhibitions, the last of which are as follows:
