The Hermit

Only some trees
Out came a hermit

The little guy said to me
Be like the birds
The wind and the treeThey have no anguish
No guilt and no pain
Enjoying their lives
And waiting for rainNo crombies or fitch
Or holes cut in their pants
Not sweatshops in India
Or models in franceTheir pleasure is born
From the depth of the green
Not wanting an ipod
Or a big plasma screenIf you ask them they’ll tell you
Although not using words
Pleasure watching the river
And listening only to birdsUpon chatting with him
On that fateful day
I started to hunger
For what he had to sayAll at once it struck me
Like a brick to the face
If he could only be heard
By the whole human raceIt just seemed so perfect
So right and so clear
I had nothing to worry
I had nothing to fearIf the forest could do it
Then why couldn’t I go
Live less like a Hilton
And more like ThoreauWhen I turned to thank him
My small friend was gone
But what lie in his place
Was a deer and her fawnI have often returned
To that special spot
One time on mushrooms
Another on potBut he knew that i knew
Which direction to go
His tiny hermit ethics
With the world I must showAnd that, my good friends,
Is what I leave up to you
If you agree with the hermit
You know what to doAs the new generation
Its all up to us
To follow his trail
And hop on the bus
