Michael Ondaatje's superb, Jonathan Carroll is interesting, Classical literature mainly, The last really really excellent one I read was... Poetry makes me cry (when it's very good and when it's very poor.) MARTIN AMIS' "Time's Arrow" was brain-blinding. "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" one of my ALLTIME favourites. All Ayn Rand. Rimbaud, Auden, Borges, Bukowski, Plath, sometimes Keats.
