THE ENTERTAINERIlla Brown has come a long way from rhyming on street corners on the west coast since the early nineties to become a refined rap artist emerging onto Canada’s urban music scene. His voice and stage presence has captivated thousands while his persona remains cool under the growing spotlight. Early on Illa credits his rap ciphers with Prevail and Moka Only that first lead him to hit the stage as a freestyle battle MC but over time would solidify his own reputation in Vancouver’s hip hop underground as a skilled lyricist releasing a series of collaborations with DJ Kutcorners. In 2003 their gritty anthem “Rock On Yah Block†landed the MC/DJ act on the !Earshot compilation Dig Your Roots Project 1: Hip Hop, giving the upstart duo immediate national exposure. The success led to a quick return to the studio to release the infectious singles “The Formula†and “Damn Rightâ€, the latter receiving considerable spins on college and commercial radio. “It used to be just writin’ rhyme,†states the Victoria-born rapper. “Then I was blown away that radio in Europe, even as far away as New Zealand was feelin’ my sound.†With a string of underground releases under his belt by 2005, Illa Brown could flex his showmanship on bigger stages opening for heavy-weight rap stars like Mos Def (Black Star), Raekwon (Wu -Tang Clan) and Fat Joe (TerrorSquad). His debut disc entitled –the illtraduction lp, (Bogueart Ent./Nuff Ent.) boasts the seductive club-banger “Red Apple†featuring R n B songstress Cory Lee.
