Movies are the pinnacle of entertainment/event in our society for the common person. That person rarely goes to a play, opera, or pro-wrestling event. They may watch too much TV, but that's not an event for these people anymore. Cinema's the thing. An important outing. That dark theatre deprives your attention from everything except the wide bright screen and encapsulating surround-sound that you hear in your brain and feel in your bones. Live music may give film some competition. Lotsa people see lotsa concerts. But people of all ages and classes see movies more often than musicians. AND ALSO, live music lacks the hours-long absorbing narrative that puts the viewer in another time and place like no other medium.
