Music:

Modest Mouse, The White Stripes, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Sublime, Nada Surf, Gomez, The Cure, The Shins, The Eels, The Clash, Weezer.

Movies:

Movies are the pinnacle of entertainment/event in our society for the common person. That person rarely goes to a play, opera, or pro-wrestling event. They may watch too much TV, but that's not an event for these people anymore. Cinema's the thing. An important outing. That dark theatre deprives your attention from everything except the wide bright screen and encapsulating surround-sound that you hear in your brain and feel in your bones. Live music may give film some competition. Lotsa people see lotsa concerts. But people of all ages and classes see movies more often than musicians. AND ALSO, live music lacks the hours-long absorbing narrative that puts the viewer in another time and place like no other medium.

Television:

Right now, I have a four-inch black-and-white tv hooked up to a DVD player in my bedroom and I use it to play music. My REAL television is unplugged, facing a wall in Baltimore. And my stereo is on its last legs in the same zipcode.

Books:

David Sedaris, Nick Hornby, Augusten Burroughs, Chuck Klosterman, "You Shall Know Our Velocity" by Dave Eggers, "Stranger than Fiction" by Chuck Palahniuk, "Hobo" by Eddie Joe Cotton, "The World According to Garp" by John Irving, The Old Man and the Sea , This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, Franny and Zooey, The Catcher in the Rye, Fear and Loathing, On the Road, "Razor's Edge" by Maugham (sp?). Comic strips: "Doonesbury" by G.B. Trudeau, "Bloom County" by Berke Breathed, and "Calvin and Hobbes" by Bill Waterson.

Heroes:

Teddy Roosevelt. But I have mixed feelings about his politics.
