About Me

I was born on May 12, 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. My father was a doctor and my mother, a suffragette, whom always encouraged me to speak my mind, develop it fully and excercise my body to its full potential. I was an athletic tomboy as a child, and was very close to my brother Tom. It was devastating to find him dead when he accidentally hung himself while practicing a hanging trick our dad had taught us. For many years after this, I used his birthdate, November 8, as my own. Shortly after this I became home schooled. I attended Bryn Mawr College and majored in History and Philosophy.
After graduating, I began getting small roles in plays on Broadway and elsewhere. My behavior is considered haughty because I always wear slacks and no makeup, didn't pose for pictures and rarely gave interviews. Among many things, I got married to Ludlow Ogden Smith after college and made him change his name because of the famous singer I wasn't fond of.
I bought the film rights to The Philadelphia Story and was able to negotiate my way back to Hollywood (from a small hiatus) on my own terms. I also got to choose the director and my co-stars for The Philadelphia Story. The film version of The Philadelphia Story (1940), was a box-office hit, and I won my third Oscar nomination for the film.
I was paired with Spencer Tracy, in "Woman of the Year" and the chemistry between us was magical. Our love lasted for eight more films, spanning the course of 25 years, and a romance that lasted that long off-screen. Even to my death I never viewed "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" because it was Spencer's last film.
I set the record for Best Actress Oscar wins (4) and was recently overtaken for my 12 nominations over a 48 year period by Miss Meryl Streep (who I'm not particularly fond of).
I've acted with Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda and many more wonderful actors.
I'm very fond of Howard Hughes, Lauren Bacall, Constance Collier, Phyllis Wilbourn, George Cukor and Garson Kanin.
