Panta rhei (Heraclitus)

About Me

First of all: The sounds of the STROEMUNG project have never been seriously recorded, since they are ment to be performed live. Whatever you hear on this page are extracts, taken from the tape-outs of the mixer while being performed.

A loop of running water ..... split into eight absolutely identical signals ..... put through various filters ..... shaped soundwaves and frequencies starting to interact ..... a new sound universe every time ..... countless possibilities ..... harmony ..... wasted (?) for the sake of chaos ..... and of course the live sound of running water .....

The STROEMUNG project is based on Heraclitus' idea that "everything is in a state of flux" and Siddhartha's realization "that all things are one". The project was started by examining the acoustic characteristics / qualities of water - RUNNING water - which also is most important to both, Heraclitus and Hesse's Siddhartha.

All sounds of the STROEMUNG project are of the same origin - they are "made of" running water. No instruments are involved: just running water, some microphones, a small 10 channel mixer and a couple of little metal boxes with plenty of knobs on top of them - little helpers, just to find out what is hidden behind or inside of the "one thing", which is symbolized by the water. In some cases additional field recordings (of running water - what else?) or just samples out of these recordings are used. Thus it may happen, that even some birds find their way into a performance, as you can hear on the track Stroemung IV.

Of course there is much more to EHEIM 1000.220 than actually could be explained right here. For example it is also asking for the impact of constant repetition (sounds, words, ideas) on human perception and - this shouldn't be forgotten - it is also a personal approach towards life with all it's questions and all the answers which it denies to give us for free.

From the sound side, the REPETITION project is closely related to STROEMUNG, since all sounds are also made of running water. In some cases even the same sounds are used in both projects. However, while STROEMUNG is based on pure sound, there are more visual aspects to REPETITION. Further, lyrics are more important in this project (take REPETITION III for an example).

While STROEMUNG is following the thoughts of Heraclitus and Buddha to find out which way things will work out if having the same possibilities from the start and if being influenced by different conditions (such as life is), REPETITION is asking different questions. For example: What do we hear and see? What do we believe to hear and see? What is the the effect on us if we keep hearing and seeing the same over and over again?

No answers ... just questions!

REPETITION I - In allen Wipfeln (you might have to turn up the volume a little bit since the sounds are mostly low to very low frequenzies).

REPETITION II - Two people, listening to running water (did you just listen to REPETITION I? Then you might want to turn down the volume a little bit before you listen to this one).

Influences:

The STROEMUNG project is strongly influenced by the book Siddhartha (by Hermann Hesse), the pre-Socratic Ionian philosopher Heraclitus and of course life itself.

Further, some ideas of Jacques Derrida (Deconstruction) have a strong impact on EHEIM 1000.220.

Some comments on REPETITION III

The voices you hear in REPETITION III are the voices of Aldous Huxley (speaking about the techniques that make propaganda successful) and - yes it is him - Adolf Hitler himself (in one of his countles...
