After serving as guitarist in Knut Schreiner's Euroboys, Dharma has been the musical vehicle of choice for Ole Øvstedal since 2002. Dharma has done loads of gigs, and gigged alongside The Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Blonde Redhead. James Iha playing thermin on the record, Noel Gallagher rocking out to The Conqueror in Abbey Road Studio Two, crashing on the floor of Hurricane Doris across Norway. The golden moments and unavoidable fuck-ups.
After serious disagreements within the band, the members agreed to go their separate ways, leaving Ole as the sole member of Dharma. However, Dharma was not dead as may have been reported, but is ready to soar the indie sky. The crew is replaced, and captain Ole Øvstedal is reunited with old mates, all equally eager to ride and explore the sonic wave that is Dharma. It is dreams and visions of youth reborn. The wave of musically lustful abundance is pumping out of the speakers and washes out the angst from last weekend, and the fact that the whole last week consisted of nervous mondays, doesn't matter anymore.
Dharma's new album, Galaxies Like Grains Of Sand, is a tribute to Cosmos, the solar system, life in the primeval forest, the parks of Oslo, swedish girls, laser guns and Gene Clark. Ole Øvstedal wrote the songs, Anders Møller was the engineer as well as the man banging the drums.
As the pleasant drowsiness of the warm summer afternoon enveloped us, Thom Hell would turn up and lay down harmony after harmony. Deadly Nightshade on synths. Crystal Canyon was boiling. Beer, frogs and dust from old records. Tago Mago.
We gave Marte and Hanne a call, and invited them to a birthday party recording session. Marte brought a bottle of wine as a gift. The wine was drunk, and she sang like an angel/her song was angelic. The record was conceived.
Shaun Curtis came up from down below, an exiled soul longing. Clouds Imperial.
Marius Brodin Larsen mixed three songs in three weeks. Christian Engfeldt mixed three songs a day. Two great masters with their own approach. We lost Marius.
But now old friends are in force. Ludwig drumset. Die Legende. Making the cosmic rock we love. Do gigs as beautiful as the cover sleeve Martin Kvamme has provided for the album.
