About Me
White Noise was fashioned out of concrete in 1979 by Miyori Hayashi as her home and a gallery for her work. It sat mostly unnoticed by the locals for decades, hiding behind trees and vegetation. After her death from cancer in 2000, White Noise remained vacant and untouched until, in 2002, the Hayashi family began restoration. The trees and overgrowth cleared away, the artwork and musical instruments cleaned and restored, White Noise Museum opened its doors to visitors May 3, 2002.
Posthumously, Hayashi's work has appeared, on loan, in several high-profile exhibitions, including one in the Tokyo Museum of Art, and perhaps most notably, the "Grapefruit: Yoko Ono in 1964" retrospective (2004) in New York City. Spring, 2006, Hayashi was one of four artists featured in a Woman's Art Journal article by Dr. Midori Yoshimoto, titled "Women Artists In The Postwar Japanese Avant-Garde: A Multiplicity."
