Factory Road are a young Warragul outfit with no relation to any label that might be found in the shops around Prahran. ‘We wear whatever is around, a flannelette shirt found in a mate’s back yard, farm clothes, we steal each other’s shit and dress up in anything,’ says vocalist Luke Morgan
They have been together for some two years now (having formed in Year 10) and play an intense grunge funk, they term ‘funge.’
‘As long as you can tap you toe to it, that’s what we like to play…but it has some professional quality behind it,’ Luke explains. ‘The style of music that we play, we like to listen to and other people do too. It’s based on Chilli Peppers, with a touch of Rage Against The Machine.
Lyrics are written somewhat collectively. ‘We’ll be jamming and someone will start a riff. Some one will say ‘Yeah, that’s cool I like that! Some one will chuck in a riff, and I’ll throw in one line that will fit and outta that everyone goes away and refines their own bit. It’s based around the guitar and the bass.’
‘We like to do our own thing, write good music, hang out with mates, etc.’
Next year come the end of school ( two of the band are finishing their studies this year) the boys intend to move the band to Melbourne and attempt to make their mark. Buzz Mag had the good fortune to see them play and they punched out the other bands on the bill. With a saxophonist who oozed ‘cool’ Factory Road’s brand of ‘funge’ was intelligent, emotive and impressive for such a young outfit.
‘We’re always going to do what we want to do, be our own blokes,’ says Luke. People can judge for themselves by hitting the band’s Myspace site. ‘They are pretty sketchy at the moment, because they’re live recordings.’
The best track with an interesting story is called ‘Fay,’ about a old lady that the guys met in Inverloch one New Year’s Eve. ‘We were sitting on this nature strip waiting for our designated driver to sober up. We were downing some stubbies, listening to some Primus music up loud, when Up walked this old lady. It was like ‘Oh shit, we’re sitting here smashing cans and playing loud music, this old lady is going to have a heart attack. I said ‘Sorry, don’t mind if we’re here do you?’ She walks up slowly, leans over and says ‘Mate I don’t give a f@k what you do!’ We all stepped back. ‘Sorry?’
For the next forty minutes she was telling us stories. She goes ‘You guys don’t want to come inside, there’s air conditioning there. I’ve minutes we’re inside eating biscuits, drinking beers and watching Harry Potter with a seventy five year old lady on New Year’s Eve.’
She didn’t seem to care. Two years before her husband had died and now she couldn’t give a shit about anything... sad I suppose.’
