Music to Amy is her vocation in life. Standing in front of a crowd, microphone in hand, eyes closed and singing, she feels freedom; she transcends earth and is elevated physically and spiritually, confirming her belief that she was born to make music.Even before she was born, Amys father would sing to her; he gave her an appreciation of music so deeply rooted that every experience thus far would lead her to pursue her goal. Despite private voice lessons and singing in church throughout high school, it wasnt until she went to college and met Greg Laswell, producer and mentor and owner of Laswell Music Design and Twenty Inch Records, that her dream started to become tangible.
Originally Amy sought Laswell to produce one track; however, after hearing her sing, he encouraged her to record an entire album. Throughout the recording process, Amy received great feedback from various record companies and encouragement from her friends and fans from various shows where she performed. The support was her fuel and motivation to finish her first album in the studio, My Place. My Place addresses familiar themes applicable to all age groups, from a girls struggle for independence in the presence of adversity from many different sides, to love and compromise. Lyrics such as, I need a little time/to find myself in all of this/(I need) a little time/to ask myself when Im gonna change, and, Ive got to believe that all this leads to something I cannot see, represents lifes complexities on an accessible level; however, beneath each situation and story lies a deeper message of hope. The album as a whole is a progression, a timeline. It reflects life: the intricacies and struggles, love, and elation. With a voice at times rich and full, and at other times breathy and ethereal, Amy delivers poignant lyrics in the foreground blended with a background of melodic pianos, guitars, and haunting string arrangements. Writing music for Amy is therapy and freedom, a chance to give others insight on her experiences and feelings on an inspirational level. Alleluia, the final track is definitive of Amys perception of life. In the midst of chaos and confusion, there is always striving for serenity and the determined resolution of hope.Amys motto to anyone who asks is, I went to college to become a rockstar, and now, after a year and a half, she is on her way.
