Bio:
One of the fastest rising stars of the AVP CROCS Tour, Matt Fuerbringer was awarded Rookie of the Year in 2003. He and his long-time partner Casey Jennings were the only players to finish ranked in the top seven individually each season from 2003-2006. Those two combined to form one of the longest-tenured domestic partnerships in history, easily ranking first among all active teams. The duo enters 2008 with a streak of four consecutive seasons with at least one title.Fuerbringer and Jennings made it into the finals four times in 2003, tying for the most among all teams. During the 2004 season, they captured their first victory at the Belmar Open. They appeared in two additional championship matches, giving them the second-most of any team on the Tour that year. In 2005 Fuerbringer won twice more, both with Jennings, in San Diego and Hermosa Beach. In 2006 they won in Seaside Heights, marking the fourth time in as many years the duo appeared in the finals in New Jersey. In 2007 Fuerbringer played the first half of the season with Sean Scott before reuniting with Jennings, and the pair claimed the season finale in San Francisco.Fuerbringer finished the 2005 season ranked fourth in blocks (316), first in kill percentage (.609) and third in hitting percentage (.448). In 2006, he was third in blocks (2.11 per game), and second in both hitting percentage (.478) and kill percentage (.616). Fuerbringer finished the 2007 season fifth in blocks (1.70 per game), second in hitting percentage (.450) and third in kill percentage (.580).Prior to making the transition to beach, "Fuerby" enjoyed a successful indoor college career at Stanford University where he graduated with a degree in American Studies. He was named four-time All-American (one of two players who were the first to accomplish that feat), Freshman of the Year, Outstanding Senior Athlete and was a member of the 1997 NCAA National Championship team. He remains as the team's career leader in kills, and also ranks in the top five in aces and blocks. His final block sealed the only NCAA title for Stanford, on a team which included Mike Lambert and Andy Witt.Fuerbringer spent five years playing professionally in Europe and speaks fluent Spanish. He has also spent time writing for DIG Magazine about traveling abroad to play beach volleyball. In the off-season, Fuerbringer is the strength and conditioning coach for the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club, which is owned by his wife Joy McKenzie, a former All-American at Long Beach State.Fuerbringer currently resides in Redondo Beach, California with his wife Joy and their daughter Charlie (born in 2006).
