At the age of five, his uncle, gospel singer Tyrone Wright, stressed the importance of adopting the love for music and all of its artistry. Introduced to all genres and facets of the art at an early age, would ultimately give birth to the career of one of the most promising and rising stars in music today.
Heavily influenced by such greats as, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, David Bowie, Marvin Gaye, Sting, Slick Rick, Bobby Brown, Prince and Babyface, Johnel developed is own confident swagger, charismatic moves and cutting edge sound, that help prove he is indeed, as his moniker entails, a “Slickdude.” Growing up, Johnel entered countless talent showcases, competitions, even school plays just to get everyone to see and hear his talent. “My nickname in school was ‘Junior Hollywood.’ The kids in school even had my teachers calling me that,” states Johnel in an interview with the Baltimore Sun. Johnel knew he was destined for more than what his neighborhood’s reputation had to offer.
Johnel’s will and determination have helped him work and perform with such artists as, Erykah Badu, Teena Marie, Musiq Soulchild, Brian McKnight, LL Cool J, Dru Hill, Blu Cantrell, Mario, Al Green, Ness (MTV’s Da Band), Kevin Rudolph (Guitar player for Timbaland) and Lil Jon. He has been praised by radio, headlined shows at venues across the country and was recently named one of Baltimore’s most Fashionable Men by the Baltimore Sun.
Johnel is currently featured on numerous mixtapes, nominated for two Underground Music Awards and writing and recording his first solo album titled, Sex, Lies and Control. Describing his music as “Hip Hop with a dose of slickness,” he says his sound is simply, “the shit everyone has been waiting to hear.” “I just say what everyone has either said themselves or want to say. I believe in making songs that make people want to turn up the volume and say ‘That’s My Shit!!’” The Slickdude definitely has something special in store for the music industry. The question is, are you ready?
