About Me

"Do I have to explain the difference between an Interior Designer and a pimp again?" -Will & Grace
"A designer knows [they have] achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
I did an online quiz once that asked me to state something random about myself. To be totally honest, everything about me is random. So in the spirit of about me, here are a random number of random facts about me:
1. I like to hang my head off the end of the bed and look at the room upside down and pretend the ceiling is the floor.
2. I eat things in even numbers.
3. I LOVE shoes, but I prefer to be barefoot.
4. I like to put words in all caps for EMPHASIS. No, I mean, I do it ALL the time. REALLY.
5. I uncontrollably open and close the battery cover on the remote control.
6. I over use the ellipsis, but I just can't seem to stop myself . . .
7. I carry a miniature level on my key ring because I like shelves and pictures to be level.
8. I love to run, but only in my dreams. Running in real life gives me shin splints.
9. I still think mix tapes are cool.
10. I used to have an addiction to those cheesy romance novels (Harlequin, I think it was).
11. I like to use dessert spoons instead of regular spoons.
12. I love to try on hats, I can spend hours doing it, but none of them ever look good on me, so I never buy them.
13. I watch scary movies and crime scene shows with a pillow so I can shield my face when icky stuff happens.
14. I can find the dirty in anything (it's both a blessing and a curse).
15. I like to use slang and cuss words from other countries and time periods.
16. I still read Dr. Seuss books . . . regularly.
17. I like to sing along to crappy 80s songs and monster ballads in my car (because when I'm in my car, I suffer from the delusion that no one else can see me).
18. I nearly hung myself on a three-foot fence (with my scarf).
19. I highlight and write margin notes in books that I read for pleasure.
20. I like to get books from used bookstores because they are already broken in, but when I buy new books, I try NOT to break them in.
21. I tie my trash in knots (i.e. granola bar wrappers, empty chip bags, etc.).
22. When I stand in line, I rock from side to side, it's involuntary and I can't seem to stop it for long.
23. I keep a pillow in my car so I can take impromptu naps.
24. When I wear my hair in a ponytail, I like to make it swing back and forth for no reason.
25. I like to have philosophical conversations with children.
26. I giggle uncontrollably. No, really, ALL the time. It can go on for hours.
27. I often suffer from the delusion that I can breathe and drink water at the same time. At least once a day there's an incident.
28. When I park my car, I HAVE to return the steering wheel to the precise upright position. And when someone else has been driving my car and does not do this, I suffer a small moment of panic when I get in my car because the balance has been disrupted.
29. I like to read the dictionary. No, it's not what you're thinking at all. I dont sit down and read it cover to cover, but I do like to periodically pick it up, flip to a random page and read a few entries. Two or three hours later, I will stop, I promise . . .
30. Every year I ask Santa for my own online subscription to the Oxford English Dictionary. (The OED provides not only definitions of words, but also the HISTORIES of the words. Yeah, you KNOW thats cool!)
31. I have a freckle on my bottom lip.
32. Whenever I type or write the word "both," I try to put an "e" at the end . . . bothe . . . Is that supposed to mean something?33. I write notes to myself on my hand. (Just on the left one, of course. On the side between my wrist and my tumb.)34. I have a favorite font. I would use it for EVERYTHING if I could. (In case you were wondering, it's Futura Lt Bt.)
35. Apparently, I am in denial of the extent of my own weirdness. My friend Gail tried to snap me back to reality by saying, "Have you actually read your random facts list? Its like a beacon with a flashing arrow saying this chic is odd...deal with it." You can be sure I'll be bringing this up in group this week.
36.
37. I find the smells of bleach, freshly sharpened pencils, and matches intoxicating.
38. When commercials for bathroom cleaning products come on, I have to change the channel. (Anyone else think there are far too many of those commercials?) Bathrooms gross me out completely.
39. I've been fingerprinted . . . twice.
40. I do not own make-up. I've got some Burt's Bees Lip Balm, but no make-up. I never really thought this was weird, but I'm told it is.
41. I know the difference between i.e. and e.g. (And yes, there is a difference.)
..

My Interests

"Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option." (I don't know who to credit with this quote, but I'm using it anyway!)
Making the world a more aesthetically pleasing place, sustainability, words, laughter in all of its forms, irony, photography , the adrenaline rush from being awake for 30+ hours, art, staying in bed all day, shoes and scarves, quotes, taking funny pictures of my slutty cat , intelligent conversation, the color red, Fresca and Southern Comfort, the sleep you get between bludgeoning the snooze button, fifth gear, and baby carrots. ..

I'd like to meet:

I’d like to meet people who will like me because of my quirks and randomness, not in spite of them. If I wanted to be around people who simply tolerated me, I'd hang out with my family and my co-workers.

Music:

I will listen to most anything that has a decent beat and lyrics I can sing along with (very poorly, of course). If I had my choice though, Live, Better Than Ezra, Sarah McLachlan, Gin Blossoms, Bob Marley, Sister Hazel, Jann Arden, James Blunt, The Shins, Augustana, Cake, Tori Amos, Matchbox 20, Death Cab for Cutie, Black Eyed Peas, Frou Frou, The Cranberries, Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, The Killers, Blondie, John Mayer, Snow Patrol, Nirvana, Sex Pistols, U2, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sugarcult, Weezer, Tom Petty (with or without the Wallflowers or the Heartbreakers), Jazz, and, of course, Jackie Daum. ..

Movies:

I’m a movie whore; I can admit it. I’ll watch just about anything once, but it takes something special, or at least something of a special level of kitchiness to get me to watch a movie more than once. I love new movies, old movies, happy movies, sad movies, movies that make me laugh, movies that make me think. Here are some of my favorites: Garden State, Speak, It Happened One Night, Amelie, Happy Accidents, Practical Magic, Juno, One Hour Photo, Pride and Prejudice, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Ten Things I Hate About You, Pillow Talk, V for Vendetta, You’ve Got Mail, With Honors, Secretary, American History X, If A Man Answers, Matilda, The Crow, Love Actually, Empire Records, Death to Smoochy, Strictly Ballroom, Donnie Darko, Bridget Jones’s Diary (I & II), The Princess Bride, Napoleon Dynamite, Return to Me, Benny and Joon, Clue, War Games, The Whole Wide World, Sabrina (the new one is actually better than the old one), Gone in 60 Seconds, anything by John Hughes, Kevin Smith, or with Vincent D’Onofrio, John Cusack, or Edward Norton...

Television:

"TV is chewing gum for the eyes." - Frank Lloyd Wright
It’s great and if it’s on, I’ll probably watch it, like a moth to a flame, but the only show I can remember to watch is Gilmore Girls. Also ranking high on my list are L&O:CI, Monk, Friends, House, Golden Girls, Will and Grace, and commercials that are dirty, but don’t mean to be, just about anything on Comedy Central. Guilty pleasure: MTV’s Made (I know, I know, but I can’t help myself)...

Books:

I LOVE to read. It used to be that you could always find me with my nose in a book, but that was before my internet addiction. . . Pride and Prejudice, Enduring Love (this book changed my life, don't let the sappy title fool you), The Kitchen Gods Wife, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Dubliners, Twelfth Night, Regeneration, Tartuffe, anything by Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, David Sedaris, Tom Stoppard, Maya Angelou, Jonathan Swift, Virginia Wolfe, Dorothy Parker, Amy Tan, Dawn Powell, Saki, Dr. Seuss, . . . theres more, plenty more, but I may be running out of room here . . . ..

Heroes:

My great-gran, Ollie, the strongest, most amazing woman I have ever known. It is a privilege and honor to inherit her name. Julia Morgan, a very smart and ambitious woman who wouldn’t let anyone stand in the way of what she wanted. Anyone who is pursuing their dreams. And George Carlin because he tells it like it is, but in a funny way so we'll all pay attention...

THIS . . . SHOULD . . . NOT . . . FEEL . . . GOOD . . .

Or so said the hunky spin class instructor. Just like that. Though, it is a little trickier to laugh while huffing, puffing, and sweating profusely, it gave me a good giggle.   Nothing like ...

Lower your expectations and you will be happy?

Yeah, it made me laugh when Adam Corrolla said it, but it also made me think. It reminded me of a conversation I had with J just before V-Day. We were watching some asinine television show and a c...
