BACKGROUND:
Coming straight from the Mid-West, the heart of soul
music, Carmen Alicia was raised on organic music. Her
Papa was a drummer in the band The 3 Jacks and a
Jill in Saint Louis, Mo., and he played alongside Ike
Turner. Her Granny, a vocalist, would sing along to
Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday, Ray
Charles and Jackie Wilson. Her aunt and uncle loved Frankie Beverly and Maze,
Keith Sweat, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Teena Marie
and Bob Marley. Her brothers introduced her to UGK, the
Black Eyed Peas (before Fergie), Boys II Men, as well
as alternative music such as Jimi Hendrix. "Purple
Rain," the movie, made Carmen Alicia fall in love with Prince for
his electric performances and eccentric tastes. Her mid-western background and rural upbringing exposed
her to country music artists such as The Dixie Chicks
and Shania Twain. “I’m not ashamed to say that I really like country music," she said. "LeAnn Rimes’ ‘Blue’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. I have a favorite artist from every genre of music."Carmen Alicia started playing her grandfather’s piano
by ear while in elementary school. Following in her
mother’s footsteps, she began studying jazz dance at age
10. By middle school, Carmen Alicia was a first chair
clarinetist and was praised for her tone. She also
performed in all of her school’s musical productions
including bell choir, show choir and the band.As student-body president, Carmen Alicia performed “Un-break My
Heart†by Toni Braxton in the eighth-grade talent show.
That year she also played basketball, as power
forward, and ran track, as a sprinter. In high school, Carmen Alicia was in both Women’s Chorus A and A
Cappella choir while running varsity track, cheerleading and staying on

Worth†by Alicia Keys in the annual talent show.“I was so nervous because the sound engineer played the wrong track for me to perform to,†she said. “So, as the crowd waited for me to sing, the show’s host, who was also my film studies teacher, started asking me questions about the huge crush I had on Allen Iverson in front of the entire school!â€Carmen Alicia continued to study jazz dance at the

Carmen Alicia moved to New York City to continue her
education at City University of New York Graduate

It’s my first true love. It is what I always wanted to pursuit, but never thought I would.â€Carmen Alicia wants to make music that breaks the
