About Me

My Interests

I enjoy traveling, seeing new places / doing new things / trying new cuisines (or drinks, but not getting drunk), playing games (cards, strategy, word), getting out in nature, jamming (I play piano & guitar), keeping up with news / current events, good movies / books, learning(especially about world cultures / travel, popular science, natural history, church history, linguistics, Biblical history / culture / criticism, epistemology (how we know what we know), dynamics of highly controlling / destructive religious groups, personality types like the Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, etc.)....I would love to learn languages as a hobby but I don't have the discipline or motivation to do it.

I'd like to meet:

Christian brothers to hang out with, or married couples my wife and I can have over for dinner.

Music:

I'll listen to anything. I enjoy classical (I'm not all pretentious about it, I just enjoy it because I was brought up with it), Rock, Top 40, 90s, jazz, Gypsy Kings, Christian rock (but not kitschy stuff), worship music, world music, country (recently introduced to me by my wife and I actually enjoy it even though I don't know much of it), etc. etc.

Movies:

It's really hard for me to narrow this down. I get into just about any movies, including (I'm man enough to say it) chick flicks, but really anything... action, suspense, comedy, drama, classics, animated features... both boring and exciting movies... both critically acclaimed and critically booed. Not too into horror or teeniebopper movies but I'll watch them.

I have too many favorites to list, but some that come to mind.... CastAway, The Game (Michael Douglas, late 90s), Cider House Rules (it's a disturbing movie on several levels, but for some reason, I like watching it), Elf, Earth (a drama about the partition of India & Pakistan), and a bunch of more "normal" ones. I'm pretty easily entertained.

Television:

I don't often watch TV so I don't know what all's good these days. Usually my wife and I watch the TV Guide Channel ("it's not just a magazine; it's a channel, with original programming!") while trying to figure out something better to watch. Then we never find anything better. So we watch the TV Guide Channel.

I can get into CSI, American Idol, the Amazing Race... maybe others I just haven't seen yet.

Books:

Anything by N.T. Wright....I'm on an N.T. Wright kick these days.

My Blog

Paris journal: quick intro

When Jodel and I were in Paris for our one-year anniversary, I kept a detailed journal.  So detailed, in fact, that I seriously doubt anyone else will want to read it.  I would have liked to...

Day 11

Not much to say for Day 11.  We got up, got out of the hotel, and took a taxi to the airport.  We were glad we were in good time, because the Algerian woman taxi driver dropped us off at the...

Day 10

The room thawed a tad overnight.  We had something of a lazy morning before heading out for our last day of fitting everything in that we'd missed.         ...

Day 9 (our anniversary!!)

Emmanuel's automatic wake-up call woke us up at "7," but given the utter darkness outside we think it was off by a fair amount of time.  We rolled over and slept again.     &n...

Day 8

We woke early, 7:30ish, this morning.  Weak dawn sunlight filled our room and birds of the countryside outside chirruped happily.  As we looked out over the Loire valley from our regal bed, ...

Day 7

Friday, traditionally, is "Bagel/Starbucks" day for us, so while Jodel got ready I trekked to one of the two Starbucks in Paris.  Parisian Starbucks don't expect you to know how to order a coffee...

Day 6

We got off to a good early start on Thursday and headed to the Marais District, which had been recommended to us as a good place just to stroll around and take in the scenery of a Parisian neighborhoo...

Day 5

Today (finally I'm catching up on this journaling! about time, at 1:52 a.m.!) we got out at a reasonable hour and headed to the Louvre.  There were plenty of people but the lines weren't that bad...

Day 4

We woke up quite refreshed the next morning after some 10-11 hours of sleep, all much needed.  The whole day was to benefit from that good start, even though lots of other things went wrong. &nbs...

Day 3

The photo tour wasn't exactly as expected.  We'd been looking forward to an experienced photographer who could guide us to picturesque locations at the perfect times of day for various lighting e...
