A little over a year ago, Jaime Lyn Barber cut her education short to follow her dream. The 22-year-old Killen native was living in Auburn and was in her second year at Southern Union when she decided she needed to make a change to fully pursue music. A year later, Barber is living in Nashville, performing her music as often as possible. Barber said it's not always easy to get respect in the industry, especially as a woman.
You have to work really hard to get half the respect that men get, Barber said. You really have to just write good songs and play good songs and hope that people get it and respect you.
Barber plays guitar and sings covers that range from Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones to Hank Williams Jr., while her originals tend to lean more toward a country sound. Her influences include Miranda Lambert, Patty Griffin, Natalie Maines and even Janis Joplin.
