The lights fade as Of New York takes the stage. Feedback swarms breeding anticipation and the silhouette of Kat Smith approaches the microphone. In a split second all energy is released into a single note. The microphone flies and guitars scream in an explosion that can only be described as Rock & Roll.
Of New York originally formed for a series of spring break shows in 2002. Then under the name Feline they brought true glam rock showmanship to a blend of rock and roll influenced punk rock. As they progressed musically their love for rock & roll pushed out the punk rock influences of their debut performances. They reformed as The Blackouts in the fall of 2002 to signify their transformation into a hard-hitting rock & roll band. Two years later they decided to change the name of their band for the final time to Of New York. The new name was symbolic of the larger than life sound and show that the band strives to represent.
With the release of their four song demo, while under the moniker The Blackouts, Of New York displays a spectrum of things to come. ONY opens a floodgate of sound on the first track Dont Say Goodbye. Followed by another venture into the darker side of rock & roll; the hard-hitting Fallen Angel is punctuated with hardcore influenced breakdown coupled with screaming guitar riffs. While Where Do I Belong has hints of arena rock appeal. The final track No Rest, has the intense energy and pure attitude of party style rock & roll shows.
Immediately following their demos release, Of New York set out on their first tour. Taking them through major cities all over the Midwest. The tour gave them a taste of touring that they long for whenever they are not on the road. In the summer of 2004 the band uprooted from their Phoenix home and relocated to San Diego seeking a broader local music scene and serious opportunity to break into the big leagues of music business.
Known for their emphasis on live presence, guitar riffs to bleed your ears dry, magnetic vocal lines, and insanely good looks, Of New York should be blowing audiences away for years to come. The only certainty is that they will not stop until they have left their mark on rock & roll.
