Born In San Jose CA and Raised in Washington DC, rapper Chaotic emerged in 1998 as one of the most promising rappers in the Mid Atlantic Region.
Using his biting wit and incredible skills to touch on everything from his ambitions and dreams to his contempt for fake individuals, his success became noticed and reached crossover status through out the World.
The appeal of his lyrics and lifestyle was the best publicity any musician could afford, and being a Caucasian rapper to make a significant impact may have given him a platform not afforded by others. A gifted ghost writer as well, his message spoke to legions of youth and elders alike who sought quality music in the rap world.
He was born John R. Hall in San Jose, CA (The Bay Area)and spent the better part of his childhood witnessing gang emergence in his hometown. Initially attracted to rap as a youngster, Chaotic began rapping at age 11, performing raps in the basement of his middle school friend's home. He went under the name Sonic, which Chaotic got from a situation in which he out ran the authorities. Due to the unavoidable racial boundaries that came with being a white rapper, he decided the easiest way to win over underground hip-hop audiences was to enter freestyle competitions and improv against other MCs in clubs. Although he wasn't immediately accepted, through time he became such a popular attraction that people would challenge him just to make a name for themselves.
His relocation to Washington DC in 1993 prompted a brief exodus from the world of rap, but he returned and found himself courted by several other rappers to start groups. He formed The Illa Half, with a street huslter and native of Southeast Washington DC named Vital and the two released a recorded single in 1998 called One Night. Chaotic and Vital enjoyed working with eachother so much that they decided to record a full length CD "The Illa Half" and preform throughout the city to promote the release.
Drafting in a few other friends, the group added one other rapper (Sacrifice), a three-member crew that supported one another as solo artists more than they collaborated. The birth of Chaotics first child put his career on hold again as he started working in order to care for his Son. This also instilled a drive that started to creep into his lyrics as he began to drag personal experiences into the open and make them the topic of his raps.
A debut record, 2001's Final First Impression, broke his artistic rut and received good reviews. He used many of the messages he had been including in his raps and reinacted them in real life, a decision that was not wise in every situation.
Tapping into his innermost feelings, he had a bounty of material to work with when his friends and associates were perishing and being incarcerated in the streets. That year he had another child, so he was forced to focus less on music, an experience that fueled his self frustration towards the hardships of being a young parent and made him even more aware that his dreams were slowly fading away.
The material he was writing was uncharacteristically dark as he began to abuse alcohol at a more frequent rate. Several unfortunate criminal cases were the last straw, as he realized his musical ambitions were the only way to escape his unhappy life. He released the brutal Minority Report, a mean-spirited, flashy, and thought-provoking record that was light years ahead of the material he had been writing beforehand. Making quite the impression in the underground not only for his strong - voiced rapping style but also for his skin color, many quarters dubbed him the music's next "great white hope."
According to legend, DPG Executive Daz Dillinger discovered his demo CD through his Publicist Shemia Miller and It wasn't until a month or two later that She played the CD for an enthusiastic Daz, who eagerly contacted Chaotic. Upon talking to Chaotic, Daz was taken back by his skin color more than his skill, but decided to put him into his reality show "The DPG Idol". Out of 3,000 potential contestants, Chaotic was one of twelve finalists and eventually became one of six winners who formed the group - "DP Next Generation"
The Seal The Deal Mixtape followed in late 2006, scoring a massive hit with the single "All Around The World" and video "Life In The Rhyme". With such exposure, worldwide recognition ensued over the album's content, with some praising its creative wordplay, delivery; others noticed its hunger and realness, as well as it's inventive production.
Chaotic has walked through the fire and defined the meaning of survivor, he has reached the extreme boundaries of life's highs and lows and came out on top time and time again. Not knowing what lies ahead, he continues to work day in and day out to accomplish his dream of being heard by the world.
