Plastic Soup?! They are ridiculous!
The singer wears white trainers with wings attached to the sides. He will go on stage wearing such ludicrous garments as Dalmatian flares and glittery shirts. By the beard of Zeus! What’s he on?
At the last gig I saw them at (Storm, Leicester square) the drummer was wearing a pair of bright blue, fluffy legwarmers on his arms whilst playing inside a glass cage. Not a pretty sight.
That said, the Soup packed the joint and brought the house down with their new set. It’s a loud yet tuneful ensemble of truly beautiful anthems.
Although their songs have always been great, the band seems to have finally achieved the consistency of sound that had been missing from the earlier gigs. The new recruits (bass and lead guitar) were certainly instrumental in this important development.
The live show is a ton of fun with plenty of banter and a good interaction with the crowd. In a nutshell, it’s a great night out. Plastic Soup is a band to watch out for and a tough, oh so tough act to follow. I certainly wouldn’t like to attempt that.
Though if you ask them their influences they’ll give you an endless list of sources (not always musical ones) you’ll like their sound if you're into bands like the Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters,Franz Ferdinand with sometimes bluesy overtones, or maybe an off his tits on rancid mushrooms jack Johnson. Only with funnier lyrics.
- Paul Johnson
FACTS:
Ajay and Dan met in 2005 and toured with a selection of bass players the most longstanding of whom being Adam Harding, before settling for Alex Collins. Recently Chris Kelly joined on guitar and they are currently recording the first ep of the new line up. And it kicks arse!
