LADIES FIRST: The Valley Isle's Songbird: ANUHEA

Article by Tiff Hervey of FREE SURF MAGAZINE, March 2008

“Only you hold your destiny,” musical talent Anuhea says of her music’s message. “It’s a lyric to one of my songs, “Endlessly,” but the underlying message of almost every one of my songs is just that. Life is a gift and we can do anything, I repeat, anything we set our minds to. Some are dealt a more difficult hand than others, and will have to work harder for the life they want, but the rewards are always so much sweeter for one who fights for it.”

The lovely Anuhea Jenkins is Hawai‘i’s next rising star, and yes, you heard it here first. Her funky, acoustic soul can be heard at Charley's in Paia every Tuesday, or you might have seen her open for Matt Costa last year, perform at the Lilikoi Fair with Paula Fuga on Maui, or perhaps heard her in your friend’s car on her Rough Cuts CD that has been spreading grassroots-style throughout the Islands. Her voice is sweet and soulful with an added spice of Wonder Woman attitude. This, combined with empowering lyrics, makes Anuhea a musical gem. She is the next generation of intelligent, evolving local artists.

Attending Kula Kaiapuni Hawaiian Emersion program from Kindergarten to fifth grade and being a boarder at Kamehameha Schools on O‘ahu from seventh grade on has given Anuhea a fluency in Hawaiian language and solid knowledge of her roots. After graduating from Kamehameha, Anuhea had a brief stint studying Video Production on scholarship at Chapman University’s Film School in Orange County. She came home after a year and did some soul searching, playing gigs throughout Maui. Anuhea soon wound up in San Francisco in search of more opportunities. After a rollercoaster of financial struggles, dream chasing and love, Anuhea once again found her way back to Maui where she settled back in, eyes open, and one gig began to lead to another.

Anuhea recently signed with OneHawai‘i Music, a record label started by her Aunty Lalani, who is a member of the female Hawaiian trio, Na Leo. “Although I’m a white girl with an acoustic guitar, I love hip-hop and rap,” she explains. “I want to incorporate the two and have an album that breaks some boundaries of the female musician in this day and age.” Her voice will soothe or stoke you out, depending on the melody— one that is truly raw and beautiful. Keep your eye on this wahine; she is a shimmering diamond in the rough cut.
