Early on as a child he was introduced to the entertainment world by his mother Juanita. First in the area of tap dance at Sherman Park on the North side of St. Louis and later piano lessons. When Bob entered grade school he studied piano and began playing bass violin in the school orchestra. Bob switched from bass violin to cello by grade 4 and continued to play cello throughout his high school years.By the time Bob reached junior high, Plymouth Jr. High in Webster Groves Missouri, he was exposed to the British Invasion (The Beatles) and musical endeavors began to change. Bobs first exposure to the rock and roll/rhythm and blues world was rooted in local bands he played in and heard in St. Louis. Some of the bands Bob was in were: The Vegas, The Public Service/Public Service Blues Band, Mr. Gas, East, The Good Feelin and Marcel Strong and the Apostles. This early experience was rich with 60s rock from The Kingsmen, The Animals, The Drifters, The Yardbirds and Strawberry Alarm Clock all the way to Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations, Sam and Dave, B.B. King, Albert King, Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan. Bob played and was exposed to many musical styles in his early years and it comes through in his music today.Bobs first solo release, Long Long Time Comin , is a roller coaster ride of musical styles that incorporate of all these early influences including more contemporary influences like The Texas Tornadoes and his love for the early minstrel blues of artists like Mississippi John Hurt. The blues/rhythm and blues is represented by album cuts: Its Bad, Hypercaloric Nightmare and Read My Mind. Minstrel Blues influence is found in album cuts: Chickabee and Sweet Little Baby of Mine. Elements of Folk Music are found in the cuts Lay Me Down and Wont Get Up Early. Tex/Mex influences are heard in the cuts Borderline and When the Morning Comes. Finally, the early exposure to classical music and multi-cultural influences are heard in the instrumental cuts Medicine Man, Priya Jit and Africa. So if your musical pallet is narrow and unyielding, youre probably not gonna be a big Bob Lawder fan. But if you enjoy things that are different and unique, youll surely find some tunes on this album that youll enjoy. My suggestion is buy it, sit back, kick your shoes off and listen to Bobs album Long Long Time Comin from the first cut to the last. It will be a great addition to your musical library.
