The "Positive" Jazz Quintet was established in 2005, when five young musicians, being
students of Russian Gnessins Music Academy, decided to get together for the sake of
playing and promoting their original music. All of them are already well known and honored among Russian jazz community, laureates of many jazz competitions and festivals.
Alexander Papiy (guitar) - is one of two main composers in the group, his writing is very advanced and complex, he had a very large jazz experience - teamed with Anatoly Kroll big band, took part in an "Open World" scholarship programs in Lionel Hampton Institute of Jazz (Moscow, Idaho) in 2006,where studied with Jeff Hamilton, jammed with Antonio Hart,Roy Hargrove, Benny Green,Claudio Roditi,John Stowell etc. - as well as a pop gig experience,worked with such famous Russian pop-artists etc.
Vladimir Nesterenko is well known both as a pianist and flutist. he is also a second main composer in a band. Played and toured with such international grands as Сlark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Frank Lacy, Steve Slagle, Zbygnev Namyslovsky,Didier Lockwood,Kim Plainfield,Miles Griffith,J.D.Walter, Michael Schiefel,Piotr Voitasik, Judy Bady etc. Among russian jazz stars teamed with Daniel Kramer, Alexander Fischer, Vladimir Chekassin, Alexander Oseichuk among others. Vladimir took part in an "Open World" scholarship programs in Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (New School Univercity, NYC,NY) in 2005, where studied with Jimmy Heath, Hal Crook, Reggie Workman, Kenny Werner, Kenny Barron etc. Was honored by Russian Jazz Journalist Association as "The hope of Russian jazz" (2004)
Timur Nekrasov (saxophone) is one of the most "on-demand" horn players in Moscow. He has a constant collaboration with at least five different jazz-,latin-jazz-,fusion- and rock-bands.(Anatoly Kroll quartet,ESH,Marimba plus, A.Makarevich & The Creole Tango Orchestra, Fruktoviy Kefir etc) Toured and played with E.J Strikland ,Dick Pearce,Greg Bandy ,Kim Plainfield etc.
Makar Novikov (bass) is a new star on a russian jazz scene, he also took part in an "Open World" scholarship programs in Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (New School University, NYC,NY) in 2005, where studied with Jimmy Heath, Hal Crook, Reggie Workman...
Hardly there is a famous Russian jazzman, whom Makar did NOT play with. Well known for his constant drive, highest professionalism and and musical sensibility.
Alexander Zinger (drums) - is highly engaged as a jazz-fusion-rock drummer on Russian scene, he took part in an "Open World" scholarship programs in Lionel Hampton Institute of Jazz (Moscow, Idaho) in 2005, where studied intensively with Jeff Hamilton.
The repertoire of the "Positive" Jazz Quintet consists mostly of original compositions by Alexander Papiy and Vladimir Nesterenko, with some highlights from the Blue Note era rearranged and added to setlist. "Positive" Jazz Quintet is a frequently featured band on a Moscow jazz scene, as well as on festivals all around former Soviet Union (Kiev (Ukraine), Almaty (Kazakhstan),Minsk (Belarus) etc.)
