Third degree burn is a rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1998, consisting of Jesse Barcos (vocals, guitar), Tony Arenas (vocals, drums and percussion). Their sound has been described as alternative metal, hard rock, to progressive rock.
Band History
Early Years: Barcos and Arenas met in junior high in the city of South Gate, Ca. in early 1993. They both shared the same home room and remained friends through high school. When Arenas was 17 years old he visited his friend’s band practice and soon realized his passion for drumming. A mutual friend signed up both Barcos and Arenas to perform at the senior high school talent show. This would pressure both to start practicing for the year end reunion.
Freedom is an illusion: 1997-2000
After high school Arenas and Barcos took to the studio and recorded their first EP, Freedom is an illusion.
Third degree burn: 2003-2008
Arenas left the band to pursue a lucrative career in the dot com boom in early 2003 and moved to Arizona then Mexico. Barcos remained focused and determined and recorded the self titled EP, Third Degree Burn.
TBA 2008- Present
Arenas and Barcos reunited and immediately started writing material. The heavy metal influence was still thriving and the music sounded mature with new musical influence that gave a fresh new sound. Arenas brought a hip hop influence while maintaining his metal drumming background. Barcos has been experimenting with acoustic and electric guitar sounds with dynamic personal lyrics. Determined to develop an original sound with a mentality of hard work and perseverance, Third degree burn is committed to this life long journey and proves integrity as a their main asset. Their debut album promises to be a testament to the underground with sounds ten years in the making.
Musical style and influences
Though initially rooted in heavy metal, third degree burn have always claimed diverse influences. Their most recent material includes acoustic songs and a variety of hip hop and rap influenced rock songs. Arenas’ life story lyrics have provoked the imagination beyond the typical rock song. Barcos has cited Jaguares’ Saul Hernandez and Pantera’s Phil Anselmo, Sepultura’s Max Cavalera, The Cures’ Robert Smith, among his favorite singers. Arenas sense of urgency in his vocal pattern is a result of influence from rapper Tu Pac Shakur, Zach de la Rocha, Deftones’ Chino Moreno, and one of his favorite singer/ song writer Trent Reznor.
