Dia daoibh! A site dedicated to my mothers maiden name, our heritage, the surname, Kellas (derived from the Gaelic word Ceallas meaning, "Church Place") which traces its origins back to Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland. The origin of the Kellas name begins in Ireland with 3 brothers Alasdair, Duncan, and James McDonnell (or Macdonnell, it has been spelled both ways throughout history.). They were apart of the 1500 Irish Mercenary Brigade sent from Ireland to Scotland to help the Scots fight the mighty English.
Sadly, the great warrior Alasdair MacColla died in the Battle of Knocknanauss in 1647.
After the "War of 3 Nations", the other two brothers, Duncan and James, made there way up to the Highlands where they eventually settled and raised there family's. The name change to Kellas was due to the fact that the Brits were hunting down anyone involved in the uprising of Scotland and the Irish that had helped them. To protect there families the brothers changed there name from McDonnell to Kellas which happened to be the name of the land that they all lived on. The 3 McDonnell brothers, specifically Alasdair, have gone down in Irish and Scottish history as legends. Many centuries later, the Kellas name lives on and there family pride themselves on the accomplishments and bravery of there heroic ancestors. Slainte!"Many's the men who've battled foe
Many the number slain
Many the lads have fallen
though Scotland shall rise again."I'd like to thank Mr. Errol Kellas, my Aunt Annie Kellas, and my grandfather, James H. Kellas Sr. for all of their hard work in research and for the knowledge that they shared with me. MÃle buÃochas do gach duine a chabhraigh liom! “Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimidâ€! Le grá go deo.
