About Me

After a long hiatus from the world of electronic/dance music, j. rogers returns...

Following his placing 3rd in Muzik Magazine's 'Bedroom Bedlam' Mix Competition in 2001 (as the only American), Joe embarked upon a successful period on the Phoenix club circuit, playing all over and securing a residency at Club Freedom. Studies in composition, piano, and conducting began in 2002 at San Francisco State University, demanding the utmost dedication. A hard choice was made: the DJ world would have to wait.

As 2008 begins, j re-enters the world of electronic/dance armed with a B.M. in music composition. "Before, I was quite happy working with 2-3 turntables. Now that Ableton has entered into the picture, a new approach emerges-- we are now dealing with the possibilities of live composition..." -j

Get Theory Part 3

Perhaps a few bad examples in the previous posts, but I am still unwavering in my belief that trying to impose centuries-old practices on such a new form with such exciting possibilities is not the wa...

Get Theory Part 2

If you see post-tonal thought as a response to tonal thought, then one definitely needs to study diatonic/chromatic theory.  I don't.  I see it as a whole new system.  So did Schoenberg...

Need some music theory, tech-heads?

A few people have asked me lately about boning up on their Music Theory a bit. Well, there's lots of approaches. But for our type of music, honestly, do not bother learning diatonic/chromatic theory. ...

Those damn genre descriptions

There are times when the long strung-together genre descriptions in electronic music can just seem silly.  I have to say there are aspects of the pigeonholing that I rather enjoy. One of the most...

Some DJs stuck in 1999...

Saw some DJs this last weekend that were quite disappointing to me. It's not that they couldn't mix, not that they didn't have the tracks, but... These guys have to re-think why the fuck they do this....

Post-Modernism? Why, yes...

How many times have we encountered the "DJs aren’t real musicians" argument? Most people that are stupid enough to actually make a silly comment of this sort aren’t really worth a retort, b...
