'...The Futureheads second album wasn’t a scratch on the debut, promising Makems The Golden Virgins have split and This Ain’t Vegas just haven’t had the publicity they deserve. Step forward next contestants then, The Cartels.
‘Broken Lights’ is a solid track. Musically it’s pretty simple, steady drums and bass with jerky guitar-work standing out the most. The lyrics retell a common scenario, another monotonous, sordid night out on the town, when staggering home just seems like the best option. Its three minutes of intelligent, diligent music.
‘The Common Cold’ however is more energetic and, in honesty, much better than ‘Broken Lights’. Its two minutes of complimentary but battling guitars without the annoyances of cheesy solos, a driving bass line and jittery drumming.
The best thing about these two tracks is the lyrics make absolute sense and don’t tread the criminal grounds of having loved and lost and some of the other common arse that’s been filling clubs and venues recently…'
