I didn't feel like I was fitting in with the typical myspacers, so I thought I should leave comments to help me conform.

A response to Jess' posting of the following quote on my page:
"Two times two is four has a cocky look; it stands across your path, arms akimbo, and spits."
Yeah, that quote is sort of at the heart of the main ideological theme of the first part of the book -the idea that, while humans are rational animals, they are by no means resonable animals, that in fact, reasonableness, sensibility and order are things that at some level humans are compelled to rebel against.
I don't know if I agree with that as a universal dictate -that its true in all times and places- but in a society like ours (and Dostoyevsky's) where people are so alienated from one another and the products of their activities, its easy to conceive a powerful hatred, for its own sake, of the established order.
What did you think of the writing? The first part vs the second part? When he goes into the "nasty anecdote" it becomes some of the most vivid and visceral writing I've ever encountered. The guy's desperation is just so fucking intense.
