As a party promoter and dj, Witnes has kept all of Down South’s underground nightlife bases covered for eleven solid years. A team-oriented player, Witnes was honored “Best DJ of 2006†by the Houston Press for his “skills on the ones and twos and ability to keep a steady scene at The Proletariat's ‘Rock Box’ every Thursday,†while the weekly was underlined “the best time you’ll have all month,†by Spin Magazine. “Rock Box†fuses hip hop bravado with hipster grit and proves that Wit’s coordination of the art direction, sponsorship and talent booking — Pase Rock, DJ Krames, Tittsworth, Caps and Jones, RadioClit, DJ Mel, DJ Klassen, DJ Tats, Bird Peterson, Oxy Cottontail, Boys & Girls, Spinnin' Kitties, Purple Crush, Kenika, Debbie D (Avenue D), Adam 12 (She Wants Revenge), Gonzo a.k.a Trainwreak (Aerosol Warfare), and 14k & Devin The Dude (Coughee Brothaz) have performed — is more than a one trick act. Marketing tie-ins with American Apparel (for “Rock Box’s†Panty Party), Red Bull and Adio-Skate, along with a successful four year run on KPFT’s “Late Nite Snax†radio show also solidified his status as a name to watch. “I come from a hip hop background, but what some people don’t understand is that a dj who can fuse different genres of music and keep the party live, is hip hop no matter what†Wit says. Party goers and marketers can expect the freshest beats from Wit’s unique sets, which include everything dance-worthy from funk-infused soul to bubblegum 80s, booty electro and classic hip hop. If South by Southwest, De La Soul and Oxy Cottontail can see it, there’s no doubt that others will too. --JK

Best DJ - Witnes
Witnes's skills on the ones and twos, plus his ability to keep a steady scene at The Proletariat's "Rockbox" every Thursday, are what make him worthy of Best DJ honors. (And his radio show, Late Nite Snax with The Grinch on KPFT/90.1 FM, brought Houston the latest in local, independent and vintage hip-hop until it was given the ax by the programming board earlier this year.) Witnes first established his place on the Houston night scene as a regular DJ for events involving the urban art collective Aerosol Warfare, and he's always been willing to lend a hand to aspiring artists looking for a break. Along with resident DJs Stiletto and Dayta, "Rockbox" usually includes one or two newbies looking to test their skills, and an impressive selection of indie up-and-comers, proving that Wit, who chooses the performers, is keeping his ear to the streets.
