Mystery Point, originally Long Story Short, is a four-piece rock band from White Rock, British Columbia, Canada. With a mix of pop, alternative, punk, jazz, big band, ska and acoustic, Mystery Point’s versatile sound blurs the lines of simple stagnant genres and instead explores the infinite spaces in between. Singer/Guitarist Chandler Tully and guitarist Travis Gingrich began writing and playing songs together in high school, but it wasn’t until 2002 that they decided to form a band. Introduced by a mutual friend, drummer Mike Ross brought a background in jazz to the table and the original lineup was set. Assuming the name Long Story Short, the band played various local shows but, without a steady bass player, they decided to part ways in 2004 and pursue individual opportunities.
In January 2005, guitarist Travis Gingrich joined Victoria band Morning Call who later signed to Drive Thru Records (California). For the next two years, Travis played throughout North America, including cross-country tours to Florida, California and multiple dates on the Vans Warped Tour. However, in August 2006, creative differences brought an end to the band and Travis moved back from Los Angeles and reunited with Chandler Tully and Mike Ross. Drummer Mike Ross had been consistently gigging with several local bands, including The Karmacanix and Ska Boom, but was happy to return behind the kit for Mystery Point. Singer Chandler Tully had also kept himself busy, studying in audio engineering and playing solo acoustic shows throughout the Vancouver area. As always, the band was still without a bass player. Enter Travis’ cousin, Kyle Rupp. Bassist Kyle Rupp moved from London, Ontario to B.C in September of 2006. He had been a part of local London bands Struck With Thought and Elworthy, but left that all behind to come to B.C. With a completed lineup and a brand new name, Mystery Point was ready to make their move.
In the fall of 2007, Mystery Point recorded their debut five song E.P. “Little Did He Know†at PAVI recording studios in Vancouver, B.C. The band is currently playing constant shows throughout the Lower Mainland at venues including Cheers Nightclub, The Roxy and Big Star Cabaret. Mystery Point’s music directly reflects their expansive scope of influences. Mixing bits and pieces from their diverse backgrounds, Mystery Point transcends the limits of conventional music and offers their own unique sound for anyone willing to listen.
