Sounds Like: The guitar in the urban popular songs of Greece. The presence of the folk guitar in Greek urban music dates back to the 19th century. It is impressive that in all phases of the development of the popular song genre, the folk guitar exists in orchestras of various forms, mainly playing an accompanying role. This role can be explained as the main instruments were always different (violin, santouri, mandolin, bouzouki). In very few cases,as recordings can prove, the guitar performs as the main instrument. Those recordings were made in the USA for the Greek community there or in Greece with the purpose of being exported to the USA. It was through those first recordings that leading virtuoso players such as G. Katsaros and A. Kostis became well known, representing a popular troubadour case. Like troubadours those guitarists performed autonomously (without other instruments) using a particular fingerstyle technique, without using a pick and having specific tunes ( open D or G).While rather few in Greek discography, which in so far as the urban popular songs is concerned is dominated by the presence of bouzouki, there are cases where the guitar has a leading role. An important moment in the history of folk guitar can be detected after the war: in certain songs of Chiotis there is a second guitar performing two or three melodic lines in a completely personal style influenced rather from the jazz. The expanding use of the guitar (in other musical genres like light, classic, jazz, etc) brought into the popular song genre a variety of guitarists of different musical backgrounds and in so doing it enriched its technique.
