About Me

Singer-songwriters may be a dime a dozen these days, but good songs are still worth their weight in gold, and at least as rare as that precious metal. Whitney Lockert is the rare singer-songwriter whose songs stand up to repeated listenings, revealing new aspects of themselves each time. Whitney estimates he has written around a hundred songs in the ten or so years since he began writing, ranging in style from surf instrumentals to hardcore rockers to beautiful introspective ballads.Whitney’s musical journey begins with a profound love of the guitar. At age 16 he was a regional semi-finalist in the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition, an experience that brought him together with other talented young players and included meeting Jimi’s father and sister. Whitney played in various bands throughout high school and college, and after graduating from UC Berkeley with a BA in philosophy, he began traveling, performing as a solo artist along the way in Thailand and Laos, as well as in California. He also began working as a sideman, performing in Europe, Libya, and major festivals in the US with Luna Angel, and in Mexico City and Athens with Nigerian reggae singer Majek Fashek. Whitney has also recorded for ABC TV commercials and with Grammy winning new age music pioneer Kitaro. He plans to continue performing his own songs both solo and in a group setting, as well as to collaborate with other musicians of many styles.
