Katie and I had been planning on 3 more months of preparation. I mean, we only knew about the pregnancy for 3 mos. and we were just getting used to that! In the early morning hours of December 11th, approx 3am, Katie started to have severe back pains. Not being able to sleep, she decided to go into the office and work on her poetry while I turned over in bed and groaned about being woken up. At about 4am, she came back in and tried to sleep. By this time her back pains where so severe, that I was woken up to massage her back and tend to the hot bandage treatments. The treatments didn’t work...I mean literally. The bandages were supposed to get hot when exposed to air, but they didn't. Pressure and pain was getting worse for my beautiful mother-to-be, so I had the bright idea to go for a walk. Thankfully, on our way out, we talked to Kathy, who is a nurse, and she advised us to go immediately to the hospital.By the time we got to the hospital it was approx 4:40 am and Katie wasn't feeling the paperwork that we had to fill out due to her unbelievable pain. A nurse came do to help her with a wheel chair, but she refused!! She walked upstairs to the hospital room and I got there about 15 mins later. I walked into the room and Katie was laying on a bed with a gown on and nurses running all over, in and out of the room. In the confusion, I heard a nurse say "She is 4cm dilated and her contractions are 2 mins apart.". This floored me. Contractions? Isn't that term usually associated with "Child birth"? Considering the bun in the oven wasn't quite ready to come out, I was a little concerned. The nurse looked at me and said she is going to give birth tonight, there is nothing we can do to stop it, the baby is already down the birth canal. Wait!! I am not ready for this....I looked down at Katie and at this point she just wanted to get the pain over with...whether that meant pain killers or giving birth, she didn't care!As the nurses were running around, pulling things down from the ceiling, preparing tables and instruments for a possible C-section, I held Katie's hand and held back tears. Not long lingering in this moment before a nurse looked up from her preparation to say "It's coming!". The nurses all dropped what they were doing and slid to the spot in front of Katie’s bed. At 5:15 am, our son slipped out of Katie’s womb and entered this world. Tears weld up in my eyes as I held Katie’s hand tighter and watched as the nurses swiftly cut the cord and handed his motionless and silent body from one nurse to the other until he reached an incubator bed. They began to clean him. At this point I didn't know if he was alive or dead. A nurse turned us and said "We are doing all we can for him". Just then Katie’s' OB doctor came. He just missed the big event. He looked at the baby and then came over to us. He said that the baby was alive and that we have a boy. He looked over at Katie and said "He could die, you know." almost mockingly. Katie and I were shocked. He gave us more bad news about preemie survival stats, and ran down a long list of possible problems and challenges. I am not going to list them here, but they weren't pretty. Katie and I listened to his report. After the doctor left, we immediately confessed the Word "He will live and not die and proclaim the works Lord!" and continued to pray for our son,Timothy John Norland. Timothy was ready to be moved now. Nurses were moving him to his new home in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he would stay for the next few months. It's been a little over one month now and TJ is doing awesome!! Thanks to all of your prayers, he is off of the ventilator and breathing on his own. He is pretty darn cute too!
