He had bought a battered old acoustic and started one of the best summers he would ever have. As the summer of ‘96 went on he would spend everyday learning how to play the guitar and every night thinking of what the future may bring. As the summer came to close he was still incredibly scratchy and he still has the recordings to prove it, but that didn’t seem to matter because he could now play the guitar! Song writing came easily for Stuart even then and he could be writing up to 10 songs a day, Song’s such as "Molly Grey" were written around this time which he still plays today. The music was steadily progressing in ‘97, his playing was getting better and so was his song writing. By now he had co-founded ‘White lies’ however he was still unsure of what direction he wanted to take his music. By now he had bought a lot of gear and was spending a lot of time recording his music. In the September of ‘97 he joined the BTEC Popular music course at Lowestoft College which turned out to be a wonderful time in his life, he was mixing with other musicians which was fantastic. He started writing better songs such as "Sweet Sherri" and was really experimenting with multi tracking. In the second year of the music course he started to develop a basic lead guitar style which opened his mind to a new sound and style of writing. It wasn’t until ‘99 that he had his first taste of the big stage, it was a good year and he played at the Seagull theatre a number of times as well as the marina theatre which he really enjoyed. He also played a large number of pub gigs which continued into ‘00 The next few years would see Stuart doing less music than he would have liked but life was good, he moved away to Norwich and Married Monique and started a family which took up a lot of his time but he never forgot the rush of playing on stage. He had lost contact with a lot of his old band mates but he remained friends with the one person who had been there from the beginning, Ricky Woods. It was June ’07 that Stuart and Ricky decided to start playing music together again and it was like they had never stopped. All the old songs sounded better than ever and Stuart started to write new ones. It wasn’t long before Stuart longed to be back on stage so together with Ricky formed the acoustic duo Brett & Woods.
Ricky Woods: Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Drums and Keyboards.....
Ever since he was a young boy Ricky has always had an interest in music, he was given his first guitar at the age of 3 but it wasn’t until he was 17 that he really started to learn how to play it. It was the summer of ’96 when he wrote his first song, “Time is running out†a song that he still plays today, and it was from that point that he knew that this was what he wanted to be doing with his life.It was ’97 that was the real turning point for Ricky, his health wasn’t great and he found it difficult some days to even get out of bed, however this turned out to be a good thing for his music as he spent most of that year learning how to play a number of different instruments including the guitar, the keyboard and the bass guitar. It was the bass guitar that would take Ricky onto the stage for the first time later that year.As Ricky’s health improved he co-founded ‘White Lies’ with long time friend Stuart Brett. Finding other band members was never an easy task and the line up of the group was always changing but this didn’t seem to stop Ricky from chasing the dream. In ’98 Ricky signed up for a BTEC Popular music course at Lowestoft College which really opened his eyes to a whole new world and in the 2 years he was on the course Ricky done a run of gigs with a number of different bands both in pubs and on the big stage. In the summer of ’00 he met his wife and his music started to take a new direction, he got a job at his local youth club and started to run music workshop’s, passing on his knowledge to the young people that he worked with. It was around this time Stuart moved away to Norwich and was starting a family of his own and the band seemed to fall a part. Over the next few years Ricky continued to teach music and started to work on a new style of music as a solo project, but he was missing the thrill of being on stage. In June ’07 Ricky met back up with Stuart and started talking about old times and it wasn’t long before they started playing music together again. All the old songs that they use to play were sounding better than ever and writing new songs came easy for them, Brett and Woods was born and they are ready for what ever the future will bring.
