Green Day - Early Days
The bands name originates from a slang term meaning a day spent sitting around and smoking marijuana. It was a teenagers pot smoking experience. Their first gig they ever played was north of Berekley in front of a crowd of five teenagers and there was no electricity, so kerosene lamps were used. They first formed as a band named Sweet Children until they felt it was necessary to change the name, thus came the phrase 'Green Day'. Some of there most memorable gigs were at none other than Berekeley California's 924 Gilman Street. Outcasts, rejects, delinquents. Bands such as Blatz, Operation Ivy, Isocracy, and Corrupted Morals played there. At first Green Day were not entirely welcome to Gilman, considering their sound was too "pop". They didn't meet up to the expectations of their hardcore piers. Eventually, in 1987, they did get a gig with the help of Larry Livermore. They were still in their teens at the time. Around the time their first record came out, entitled 39/smooth, their original drummer Al Sobrante (John Kiffmeyer) left the band to seek a college education. Around this time, Larry Livermore (owner of Lookout! records, and in the band the Lookouts) recruited drummer Tre Cool, former drummer of The Lookouts (since age 12), to take over. He then formed a bond with the two other members, and became their permanant drummer. A year later, in 1992, their second record, Kerplunk was realised. Slowly things began to change. Kerplunk had sold more copies then any other band on Lookout records on word-of-mouth alone. Still playing in small clubs and backyards, Green Day would never imagine what might happen next. In 1993, major lables tried to get thier attention. They were looking for a band who would appeal to the masses but still have a "punk edge." Most of the requests came across as ridiculous, and were rejected. All except for one manager, Rob Cavallo, who wanted them for the right reasons. (More coming soon)

FAVORITE MOVIE AT THE MOMENT: Detroit Rock City is about four diehard KISS fans wanting to see Kiss in concert for the third year in a row. But they must find tickets first, becuase one of their moms' burnt them because they were "tickets to see the devil in flesh". It's about how far a die hard Kiss fan would go to get a some tickets to see them. People were getting offended by Kiss and calling them satanic and stuff. My favorite quote is "I lost my virginity in a church confessional booth! lord have mercy!" It's also really entertaining so I suggest you see it now.I really like any movie from the 80's and early 90's.
